BBQ be careful?
Had a bbq in my garden which has no property within 100m and no vegetation that could possibly catch fire, and at the end of the evening I burnt some left over paper and sticks etc so it smouldered away and later I checked to make sure it was out.
Around 2.30am my dogs went mad as there was someone outside with a torch who soon made a quick exit but it wasn't until the next morning when the belediye turned up that to my shock was about the burning of the small papers and twigs as someone had reported it. The next big shock was that I can be fined 4000tl which I can understand if its a towering inferno fire but a small fire in a BBQ tray.
My neighbour who is local has fires nearly every sunday which is a nightmare as we normally hang the washing out but we put up with it.
I know the law states you need permission to have a fire but from the 1st May you cant burn anything so make sure your BBQ is not showing a flame at all.
I am not saying which belediye turned up as I don't want to cause bad feelings.

Given the tinder-dry state of the vegetation a spark from an unattended fire could cause massive damage - that's the worry. I'm not suggesting that you were blame-worthy but all fires should to doused to kill-off any chance of sparks flying if you are going to leave them - no matter whether it's 1st May or not. That's just common sense.

The paper and sticks were in the BBQ so no difference to when I started the BBQ with paper and sticks.
Think I will buy a gas BBQ much easier.

It is quite different in practice - when lighting a BBQ you are not planning on leaving it unattended - but when you've finished with it and leave it unattended it becomes an issue of safety as a single spark can ignite the pollen blowing off the trees and grass in dry weather (we get that here) and cause a forest fire in no time at all. Never go to bed without making sure the embers are well and truly out.solic200 wrote:The paper and sticks were in the BBQ so no difference to when I started the BBQ with paper and sticks.
The same goes for cigarette butts too... although many locals smoke only the self-extinguishing ones that are apparently quite safe to throw from the car window......

I was horrified this evening when I looked down at my neighbours garden and saw flames coming up from his unattended BBQ, this was placed underneath a pine tree, very close to dried grass on the side of the ravine.I could not believe my eyes, this man is a police officer, what about setting an example to others.

Why would a member of the police force set an example? No other country demands or expects this.

Perhaps I ought to have said that I would expect him to use some common sense then.tomsteel wrote:Why would a member of the police force set an example? No other country demands or expects this.
