Not near the airport - don't know if there are any but wouldn't be near the sites anyway. We stayed in The Blue House Hotel - http://www.bluehouse.com.tr/english/default.asp - which is within walking distance of all of the things you might want to see. They can arrange a taxi to pick you up and return you to the aiport. Hope this helps.

we have just come back from Istanbul. Stayed at Raymond hotel, in Sultan Ahmet, ten minutes walk from Blue Mosque etc. Not expensive, clean, an good breakfast. |Check it out on Trip advisor or similar. Enjoy Istanbul wherever you stay. Oh, yes, they arranged transport from Ataturk for 30 euros.

You don't say which airport, if Atatürk then Sultanahmet is the place to stay but if Sabiha Gokcen then Taksim is a bit closer/easier to get to. Best sightseeing is in Sultanahmet, in my opinion, especially if you only have a short time. If thinking about travelling by public transport, it's very good, investigate an Istanbulkart which can be used on any type and gives substantial discounts.
