I do not think you would be out on bail if you had done that here, do you ?

I think his name was Tony Archer, but I could be wrong. About 5 years ago, this 72 years old Brit was driving quite normally in Gazimagusa, or Lefkosia. 10pm and a moped with two local kids came out of a side road, no lights, no helmets. Both ended up dead. Tony?? wasn't charged with anything because he wasn't at fault. He was, however, denied bail and after being locked up for four months, was deported. Is this what you'd rather have?

The point is that it isn't here. We're talking about the UK where this gentleman would NOT have been incarcerated.

Kwakert, when this 'person' is found guilty, I'm sure he will be, I hope he gets a sentence commensurate with taking an innocent persons life.

You only have to watch some of the Police Camera Action type programs on British TV and its littered with re offenders still driving cars when disqualified or drunk or even on drugs.... most or them repeat offenders or have skipped bail with no intention of attending court until caught.

Lenient sentences and wishy washy laws are letting honest law abiding people down.

Go through a 40 sign at 50 and you are for the high jump but mow someone down and you are treated like a victim.
Its all wrong.

I doubt he will get the sentence he deserves!

The leniency of sentences for those found guilty of killing people driving a car, in general terms is an issue. However in this case we do not yet know if those arrested by the police were guilty (and only one of them can be of dangerous driving) , or what sentence they will actually receive if and when they come to court and if they are found guilty. I think that is the point that I and some others are making (in regard to this specific case)

In terms of the issues of leniency of sentences for such things in general terms, for those that want there is a 'online petition' that can be found here

As several posters have mentioned the trend of unruly behavior and lack of respect in the UK and many other supposedly democratic country's stems from total lack of discipline and deterrent. As someone very rightly pointed out if you allow them to, then children will behave like Monkeys.

In both junior school and senior school we had certain teachers that you knew you did not play up, if you did you suffered the consequences , certain teachers put the fear of god into us, you made sure your uniform was perfect, your tie was tied, you stood still and quiet whilst waiting for teacher to arrive. If you did wrong you were given the slipper, ( A plimsoll) but some teachers had a reputation for hitting hard.

But we had other teachers who were soft and yes we took liberties with them.

But also our parents whacked us, and my dad did not mess about when he hit me it counted.

But I learned from and early age to do my best to behave.

Is there a single shred of discipline left any longer in the UK ? Is there any REAL deterrent ?

With out this there is not much hope.

You may be thinking of Anthony Davey. As I recall (and there are some on this forum who know more than I, especially "cyprusishome", Anthony was driving home, I thought it was East of Girne, and hit a motorbike driven by 2 Cypriot lads of 16 or so, both of whom were killed.

It was said that one was killed by a Cypriot driving in the opposite direction from Anthony, but he was never arrested or charged. Knowing the Cypriot attitude to culpability, this isn't surprising.

I always suspected that Anthony was arrested and eventually deported for his own protection.
