Problem with multimax vpn

I am having problems with the multimax vpn. I manually connect to it then try to connect to bbc I player and it sometimes shows that I am outside the UK so will not play, this appears to be intermittent. I am using windows 8 and out of curiosity has anyone else come across this problem. Erol at multimax has kindly said he would have a look at my computer but I thought I would ask on here first to see if anyone has a solution. Please be gentle with me because I am a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to computers.

I have Multi ax VPN but also subscribe to Surfeasy VPN which costs me about £15 a year, which means I can access not only UK but US TV as well.

I think I may be technically challenged but can anyone explain how to get the Multimax VPN please. Ihave a free app for Tunnel Bear VPN but restricted on amount of data.

Erol are you able to offer advice. I have not really explored how to get the VPN is it on Multimax website?

Cheers

There are guide for configuring the free multimax vpn on win 7 and ios here (these will only work if you are on a MM connection)

libby if you are a multimax customer and you want to pm your multimax customer name I will investigate for you. Streaming TV from the UK over internet will never work perfectly but it should work as well as it 'used to' so many there is something going on if you have seen a dramatic change in how well it works.

Going back to mikea11 original question / problem.

Mikea11 seems to intermittently be experiencing messages from the BBC saying he is out of region even when seemingly properly manually connected to the Multimax VPN. This is very strange and I have not seen or heard of this elsewhere, which is why I would like to get my hands on a machine that is showing these symptoms so I can see it for myself.

I have been having considerable trouble connecting to I Player. It was always intermittently difficult, then about six week ago it improved significantly and for a couple of weeks it played perfectly connecting immediately and hardly any buffering. About two weeks ago it started refusing to connect : but it does not say anything about where I live it just says slow connection and recommends downloading.

I can get it back by either switching of and on again or using the "repair connection" button but all the fiddling takes up half the evenign.. I did discuss this with Erol a little bit ago, but we found no explanation. I am beginning to wonder if there is a loose connection in the router? I havent reported it so far, as at this time of year the Beeb are producing very little I want to watch anyway but there are a couple of programmes I would miss.

Ragged Robin.....mine exactly the same, I play it on my IPAD and 5 minutes in it freezes or buffers but if I go back to settings and turn off then on the VPN i can continue to watch it again sometimes for 20 minutes or just 5.... I check my speed without VPN it's flying but with it hardly anything at all. It is frustrating but if an answer could be found I will be overjoyed. I know using a VPN slows it down but I don't expect it should be that significant ......any answer would be great! I use both Multimax's VPN and toggle between them.......

I'm confused - again...

The Multimax 'automatic VPN' should allow you to watch BBC iPlayer, without 'turning on' their (free) 'normal' VPN.

Is this not the case?

Has something changed?

and... have you reported your difficulty to Multimax, and what did they say?

I am really interested in this, as I live with a 'TV-aholic', and as soon as the weather cools down, and TV watching resumes, I'll be in the firing line if it's not all working OK...

The way the MM 'auto VPN' works is by knowing before hand where the BBC 'serves' it's video content from. This list of servers that the bbc send its streaming content from is a dynamic thing and varies both over time and in time based on things like current load on the various bbc servers and also what the content is (live stream, catch up stream etc) and where it has been accessed from (iplayer site , bbc many different web sites sections etc ) and other factors besides. We do our best to keep the list of such servers needed for the 'auto vpn' to work as up to date and comprehensive as possible but it is a moving target and there will be times when the auto vpn will not manage to make it appear to the bbc as if you are in the UK without you, the MM user, having to do anything. In these cases use of the free manual VPN should work.

I do want to stress that the free VPN facilities that MM provides are just that , free and not considered part of the core service which is an internet connection. I think of it myself as akin to getting my windscreen washed when I fill up with petrol. Sometimes my screen is not washed but I do not think as a result I have not got what I paid for, which is the petrol. If it is washed that is a great free extra and I appreciate it as such.

I also want to stress that as an internet provider we do not sell 'tv services' be that iplayer, filmon, Netflix or any other such service. We always do our utmost to help out customers with any problems they have but the truth is it is possible for your internet connection to be working perfectly as far as the parts of it that MM have control over and for you to still experience issues with such services. This is true even for people using such services in the UK and you only have to google 'bbc iplayer buffering' http://www.google.com/#q=bbc+iplayer+buffering to see that there are literally thousands and 10's of thousand of people in the UK whop have problems of one sort or another with services like bbc iPlayer.

The basics of diagnosing such issue is really to try and replace or remove elements to see if that makes a difference. So if you have constant problems on a given device (laptop or ipad or android box) then try it on an alternate device and see if that makes a difference. Try an alternate VPN to the free MM one and see if that makes a difference. Try connecting your device (if possible) directly to the wired MM connection that normally plugs into the router inside your house (thus bypassing the router) and see if that makes a difference. These are the kinds of diagnostics that you can try to try and isolate 'where' the problem may lie. Even then it may not be possible to find a definitive solution. That may not be what people want to hear but it is the truth.

I personally use a range of ways and means to access the TV content I want to watch. So in the example of BBC iPlayer for things that I know I will want to watch I actually tend to download them first and not stream then (I use a third party system to download content from BBC iPlayer called 'Get IPlayer'). I also use a paid for third party VPN service because such can be made to work with my Samsung Smart TV where as the MM free one can not. With that in theory I can then use the apps on my smart TV as if I was in the UK. Generally these work well enough (not perfectly but useable) for me for BBC, ITV and Netflix. However the All 4 app (channel 4) does not work in a useable manner and despite all my efforts to try and fix this I have been unable to do so. I know it is not my internet connection per se because via a laptop or PC 'All 4' does work , either with the free MM VPN or using my paid for one. In the end I now simply go through the rigmarole of plugging the laptop into the TV when I want to watch C4 content (currently enjoying the series 'Humans').

As I say MM does it best to help its customers as much as it can with these kind of issue and I believe we do so to an extent that is not found from other ISP even those in the UK. We will always try our utmost to ensure that the problems are not being caused by anything under our direct control. In addition we will also try our best to help customers even when all the indications are that it is not anything under our direct control. However as in the example above with my 'All 4' issue on my smart TV, sometimes there is no definite answer and solution I am afraid.

Erol thank you for your explanation and this is why I have not reported it as I know it is a service that I'm not actually paying for but a perk and when it works I'm grateful but just thought if there was a way around it I would jump on the band wagon. BBC iplayer works perfect on my play station 3 but not IPAD and it's the IPAD I use mostly as it's portable. Thank you again for you prompt reply ............
