What happens if you don't respond to the text? We live in the UK and I don't think Kibtec even have my TRNC number. I also have no idea what my account number is as that info is in Cyprus. Currently our local Esentepe co-operative (Koop) pay our bills.

So will I still be able to pay at my local butcher and how do I get the bill for my neighbour's house?

Meldy, I shouldn't think anything changes as regards payment, just take your phone with the bill details or a copy of the email to the butcher and he should have all the info needed to match your payment to your account. Kibtek have not said anything about changing method of payment just that they are changing the method of delivery of the bill. We pay by direct debit, I don't see why that might change. I imagine that Kibtek are going to add information (mobile no. & email address) to the electronic details they already hold for each customer but in order to do that they need the other information ( consumer no., account no., name and address) to uniquely identify the account to add them to. I also pay for neighbours who live in UK, I have sent their info in but from my phone and with my email address. This seems logical to me but we do live in an illogical country

BTW I wouldn't set too much store in getting a thank you text, it is just an automated response.

According to the newspaper report if you do nothing you will still get a paper bill, so if you're worried do nothing.

Below is exactly what I sent, with my own details inserted, obviously. I received an instant acknowledgement which was automatic, I think.

I went to Kibtek this morning and I have to say that the link to Cyprusscene in message 50 is spot on with the information required.

Cooper: I also enquired about the fact that I DO NOT have a 'smart' meter, the response was no problem because we want everyone to register because it takes a long time to get everyone's details logged into the computer and soon most people will have a new meter.

I got mine in English and this is what it said. (How do they know one's tel.no.???)

For every electricity meter registered on our consumers' name, we kindly ask them to send us a SMS for each meter individually from the GSM number they want to receive their electricity billing information. This SMS will be FREE and should be sent to 9898. This SMS should include; Identification number, account number, name, surname and an e-mail address with a space after each information. Electricity Authority of Northern Cyprus (KIB-TEK).

Follow on from my msg no 15: Went to Kibtek this AM with a TC friend (just in case and because he was acting as guarantor) took with me copy's of everything and a big pile of TL. Lots of people about mumbling to each other but went up the stairs to the main office and saw the guy who sits at the first desk. On his desk was a pile of forms to fill in??? My TC friend explained that I wanted to change the meter into my name and to register the details that were required from the SMS I had received. I also wanted to pay the bill for the July period as I had not received a bill after the digital meter had been installed on the 6th of July.

After a brief conversation my friend told me that A), I did not need to change the registered name for the meter unless I really wanted to because the bills would be sent to my details now. B), There would be no bill to pay for the July period, it had been cancelled (IPTAL). C), I should not expect an SMS/Email bill until all the old meters had been changed to the digital type and this could take up to a year. D), My new Digital meter would be read by the normal meter readers and the paper bill would be left for me as normal. E), Reading of the Digital meters would begin on the 1st of Aug. F), I had about a year to provide the details required. G), Did I still want to pay 469TL to have the name of the meter changed?

My answer to G was NO!!!!! I kept my 469TL!

The next thing we did was to take one of the forms (In Turkish only) from the man and complete and sign it, handed it back to him and that was that - job done!

The man was very helpful but if I had not had my TC friend with me I would have struggled to fill in the required information, I still do not know what information was really required as my friend filled in the form for me and all I did was give him my telephone number, my last bill (from which he took the majority of information) and my email address.

As I said before - if you have questions then go see Kibtek they could not be more helpful. Main thing is that this is just the start, don't worry over it and just sort it in slow time, nothing bad is going to happen if you don't finish the whole process by Friday!

Went to the bank yesterday where we normally pay our electric bills and they verified that the identification number that kibtek
is asking for is your passport number.

Butlers wife, I've been waiting for someone to confirm that i.e. Passport Number. Those people who are sending insufficient information but still receiving an acknowledgement is because its clearly automated. In due course they will receive another text I feel sure. BTW, were you able to supply the information to the Bank and they in turn contact Kibtek?

Funny that if you owe 469TL then they will cut you off AND that to register your name on the meter costs 469TL! By my workings out, I owe about 250TL on my old meter but they will not give me a bill for that as it is supposed to be IPTAL and I also owe - currently, no pun intended - about 250TL on my new digital meter which has still not been read since installation on the 6th of July - still waiting for the 2 or 3 days to go past when they should have read it!!!

IPTAL for Junes bill, do I believe that this will be true? Well, I talked to the fairies at the bottom of the garden and asked the flight leader of the pigs that crossed over my house this morning and they both say that Kibtek would never tell me a lie!!

In effect, I think that Kibtek meant that the June bill had been cancelled and that the total cost of June and the new meter reading of July would be added together to form the bill for July. Now that makes sense to me as it means that they could then charge all of July's electric at the highest band cost and make the bill that much bigger - NOW THAT I DO BELIEVE!!!

Waddo,

Oh ye of little faith!

What they normally do when the charging period is longer than normal, is to simply increase the number of units in each charge 'Band'.

The allowance, as I'm sure you realise, is calculated by multiplying the number of days between readings by 8 and a third.

So instead of 250 units for a nominal 30 day period, you should get something like 508 units in each charge band - the exact number will depend on the interval between the May reading, and the July reading. I hope!

Waddo is correct in his assumptions. We had our new meters installed in March, for the next two months we only received bills for
the standing charge. May's bill was double what we normally pay and so was June's but we were charged the higher rate for half
the units on both bills, something which has never happened before. So yes kibtek are making money wherever they can.

Waddo, when the dust settles, would you mind letting me have your meter reading dates and readings (and/or reported usage, as a new meter is involved) for the period immediately prior to, and following the change - and I will attempt to crunch the numbers.

I have looked at the charging system in some depth in the past, and was able to refute the allegation that KIBTEK benefited unfairly from varying the meter reading dates at holiday times (which was a fairly widespread 'belief' at one time), so I would be interested in looking at the 'evidence' this time...

If you prefer to pm me, I quite understand - that way at least , you only have to deal with me trying to 'prove' that, based on your electricity usage, you must be either a) running a Brothel , or b) growing cannabis in your loft, or c) operating a poteen still

Keith.

Last bill I received was dated 8/6/2015 (May electric bill). Final reading on that bill was 67632, total units used in that period were 396.
Old meter removed on 6th July @12:05. Final reading on old meter was 67932, total units used up to that period were 300.
Normal date for all meter readings is the 6th or 7th of the month.

New digital meter installed on the 6th of July @ 12:05.
New meter reading on installation was 000000.

Meter reading as of today the 30th of July 2015 is 000331, total units used up to today is 331.

I now expect a bill for the July period from the 6th of July up to the date of meter reading (probably around the 6th of August), which based upon daily average use should be around 430 units - that is fine as it is now summer/hot and the air con in the office is used quite a lot.

However, I would be very surprised if Kibtek did not add on the 300 units from the June bill (not yet received) to make a total of 730 units used over that period and then charge me at the highest rate for units used.

Having read your "charge band" figures above I am now unsure as to what they will do. But if all goes well I expect my lowest charge band charge to be on around 407 units and so on for the next band and the next band?

I am trying to save units by turning off the red light outside, moving my cannabis farm outside under plastic and have converted my still to solar power, have even reduced the megawatt output on the death ray that keeps my garden free of visiting cats and have found that it is cheaper to instruct the wife in the proper ways of the "Punka Walla" than have the fan on. My plan of switching off the fridges and drinking cold beer from the fridge at the Supermarket failed when I worked out how much it cost in petrol to drive down and back every time I wanted a "Cold One". However, the fitting of hand powered fans to the dogs tails has been a total success!!!!!!

My husband went into to Kibtek yesterday to pay the paper bills, including communal charge, and signed the form for continued paper bills. When he asked how they intended to SMS re communal charges in a block like ours, of four apartments, there was just a shrug and a "dunno". Luckily Bryan got in before the deadline!

waddo, that makes 58 days between readings (assuming that you are right about Aug 6th) so I reckon that you should be billed for 483 units at the lower rate, plus 247 units on the next higher band - plus all the usual bits, and KDV, of course.

We'll find out in about a week if they're playing fair, or not!

We've been in the UK since the end of June and knew nothing about this except that our meter was changed (no notice, no instructions) just before we left.
The kind neighbour who keeps an eye on the house in our absence found that we've been cut off, despite having left our account well in credit.
Could this be something to do with the fact that we neither received nor responded to the text message I'm reading about?
Our wonderful neighbour is taking copies of our June bill (which showed 69TL in credit) and the bank receipt for a further 400TL to our Kibtek account so I'm waiting to hear the result of his efforts
Don't fancy arriving back late at night to find no power!

Hi btkkt,
We were without power too.
In a similar situation, all bills up to date
Turns out it was a blown fuse, caused by heavy usage/defective fuse.
3 houses fed via 1 fuse.
Kibtek replaced fuse, once informed of the problem.

Thanks for that Navek - that gives us some hope but as far as we know, nobody else is affected.
We haven't heard from our neighbour yet so we'll keep our fingers crossed.
