Help! Our Hotpoint fridge is slowly dying on us (the freezer is still working) Anyone know a reputable repair shop in the Alsancak or Girne area? We have tried a couple of shops around here but they only deal in washing machines and dishwashers. Not the kind of weather for luke-warm food!

As I've mentiond on another thread, the humid atmosphere here can result in the formation of ice which builds up every time that the door is opened. This can jam the blades of the fan which is supposed to circulate the air (sometimes preceded by a 'clicking noise' as the fan blades start to rub against the ice).

The cure is to switch it off, take all the food out of the appliance, leave the door open, and defrost the whole thing - et voila!

It might take more than 24 hours, but you should be able to speed it up with bowls of warm water, or a hairdryer.

Make sure that it's all dried out, particularly any exposed insulating material, because if it's soaked with water, it won't do its job properly, and the problem will recur.

Of course, you have the issue of what to do with all the food! - I'll leave that one to you...

Oh, god, tearing hair out! Thanks, Keith, for the quick reply, I think we'll have to search around for someone to store our freezer goodies.

Modern fridges have a automatic defrost system. This is an electric element that is fixed to the condenser coil (the pipes that carry the cold refrigerant). When required the heater should kick in, defrost the condenser allowing the water to evaporate at the back of the fridge. This fault will not effect the freezer. My defrost coil packed up two days ago, second one to go, spares on the way from the u.k. I DE_ iced in manually and now will keep turning the fridge off for a few hours every few days until spares arrive. Hate warm beer.

Well, this is going to sound quite mad (and we don't understand it ourselves), but the fridge gave itself the kiss of life overnight, and we woke up to the sound of it merrily cooling itself, freezer is fine, rest of fridge is nicely cool. And no, we have no idea how it revived itself, just profoundly thankful it happened!
