Am having trouble with the above, can get so far and no further. Trying to COPY a contact list from an older version of W.7 on the PC to a newer Version of W.7 on a laptop. We have g.mail (please don't say I should have bought W.8 because I don't want to know!!) I've been on to Google help and I get so far but no further. The instructions as to moving from Yahoo etc to Google seem much more straight forward than Google to Google. Anyone out there who could let me have an idiots guide, because that's how I feel with this one!!

Do you access you gmail account from a web browser (internet explorer or google chrome) ? If you do then there is no need to move your contact list. They will be stored on google's servers and where ever you access your account from should have the same contacts ?

As Erol says - if you are a gmail user - you only need to log into your account from the 2nd laptop and your contacts will automatically be available to you.

There is however a facility to transfer your contact list - should you need to;- Go to the 'GMAIL' marker in top left corner, select 'contacts' from the drop down menu.

Make sure that 'all contacts' are highlighted in the left hand panel

Under the option 'More' there is an option to 'export' contacts (depending on your version of Gmail, you may be directed to 'old contacts' - follow the on screen prompts.

Once your contact list has been exported as a file (note the file name) - you can then copy this onto your other laptop. Using the same procedure you can then 'import' your contact list.

hope this helps

In that case the process greengate suggested is what you need. Export the contacts from the 'old' gmail address (this will not remove them from that address). The import them to the new gmail address. This can be done on a single machine - log into the old gmail account - export - log out of the 'old' account and log into the new one and then import. In fact it is easier to do it on a single machine as you then do not have to copy the exported contacts from the old account to a different machine in order to be able to import them.

I must have a very old version on my PC, it took ages to find "more" and when I clicked on it it just reverted to "less". There is something that says "import" but it asks questions I don't know the answers to. I thought this was going to be so simple. The laptop version is quite obviously the latest version of W.7 as the layouts are different to mine,

This is how it works on my machine. Open up your gmail account in google chrome (or internet explorer). Click on the drop down that says 'gmail' as shown here

and select contacts.

then click on 'more' as shown here
two.JPG
then select 'export' as shown here
three.JPG
you may then get a message like this one. if you do go ahead and click 'go to old contacts'

continued

then click on 'more' as shown here and select 'export'
five.JPG
you should then see a 'export window' like this one
six.JPG
select 'all contacts' and 'google csv format' and press the 'export button'. Google will then down load a file called 'google.csv'. Using google chrome the download will show in bottom left of the browser window (its a bit different in IE).

This is your file with all your contacts in it. You will need to know where this file has been saved to. Once you have this file and know where it is you can log out of the old gmail account and log into the new one. Then you need to find contacts , more , import and import this file into the new gmail account. Job done. If you really get stuck give us a call and Ill talk you through it, or if you want pop round some time and ill do it with you from here - as long as you know the log in details for both accounts.
