Has anyone received the download to their machine yet? I intend to load it onto 1 machine to start with and then see how it goes.

I have been running the win 10 beta versions on my partners laptop for the last 3 months or so. It seems pretty stable right now it is not such a big 'change' from win 7 to win 10 as the change from win 7 to win 8 was. Will probably update my main machine when it releases but only after taking a full backup of the win 7 so I can go back. Normally I do not rush to move to a new version of windows until there is something specific in the new version I want or need. For me as a 'gamer' the new version of direct X is what is encouraging me to upgrade to win 10 on my main machine. Without that I probably would not bother.

I am going to let the program download on all 3 of my Windows machines, but only install on 1 until I see how it goes. I was just interested if anyone's download has started yet?

Yes my machine has been downloading the updates 'in the back ground' over last few days. I run a small program on my machine that monitors network usage and I have noticed lots of downloading going on in 'idle periods' from a process that is effectively windows update.

Just to be clear I am getting the 'pre download' because I have clicked on the win 10 icon that appeared in my system tray a while back and confirmed that I wanted to do so there. It looks like this
Capture.JPG
Capture.JPG (9.78 KiB) Viewed 2155 times
its the '4 squares' icon. So you do need to click on this on machines you want to start 'pre downloading' on I think

That's fine Erol, I have the window icon in all 3 trays. I have to admit it took a lot of effort updating to get it on the Samsung Netbook. I am informed they are all ready for download.

I've also been running the preview version for a few months; I also like it and am going to download for my laptops and desktops - but, like Erol, I will backup (or clone) each of them before installing Win 10.
One important point - search/google "wifi sense windows 10" and read carefully - there will be some over-the-top scaremongering no doubt, but nevertheless, careless sharing - what type of material could/would someone download and how much download are you limited to by your provider?

Windows 10 security alert as new 'feature' automatically shares your wifi passwords with ALL Outlook, Skype and Facebook contacts who also have the software.

...And as such, I have "automatically" disabled this "feature".....
I have no wish or intention to share any of my passwords - for anything - with anybody......
Perhaps that is why in over twenty years of computing, BBS and internet usage, I have only ever (touch wood!) had one virus infection - discovered and eradicated very quickly....

I used this link to force Windows 10 Pro installation as I had several x64 update issues that stem from windows 7 updates that even Microsoft could not fix - and would seemingly stop the normal Windows 10 upgrade process

http://venturebeat.com/2015/07/29/how-t ... ws-update/

It worked seamlessly and was painless....

But if you are using Wi-Fi do have regard to the vulnerabilities of Wi-Fi Sense and consider disabling it.....

"To change your settings, go to Network settings then Manage Wi-Fi settings (Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Manage Wi-Fi Settings).
There, you can choose which contacts you share Wi-Fi settings with.
You can toggle the setting to discover friends' Wi-Fi networks, or opt not to.
If you want none of it, you can uncheck every box."

Windows 10 downloaded automatically this morning when I switched on, took about 2 hours to complete, reboots several times during the process but now running A1.

Read this thread last night and decided to check both of my laptops, only one of which I will upgrade to Win 10 the other will stay on Win 7.
On the one I am (have) upgraded to Win 10 I found the upgrade file on my C drive, checked windows update and saw that the download had failed several times. I deleted the folder opened, run and entered a command prompt as admistrator and it started to download Win 10 all completed and seems to be running smoothly.

No not in any official manner. The free upgrade offer is only for those who have a licensed copy of either win 7, 8 or 8.1 I am afraid.

One small wrinkle I've experienced - the Windows 10 installation did not recognise that my audio out was through a set of speakers connected to the green audio out of the graphics card.... simple fix - removed and reinserted the jack plug and the system recognised a new audio connection and allowed me to configure and save that and hey-presto audio is fine....

I had Windows 8 on my laptop and hated it. I like 10 better but I am still checking everything. One thing I noticed, that I can't find my AVG virus checker pro!!!
I did a search and the only thing I found was a file called 'AVG secure search' and 'Visual Studio 2010 x64 redistributables' and I haven't got a clue what that is .The rest - It's just gone!!!

I've used it for both a 32 bit and 64 bit PC without incident... did you download the right Media Creation Tool for your PC? i.e. is it 32 or 64 bit?

Waited patiently for the official download, which took a while. Up and running with it now, disabled share wifi and messed around to get rid of the login screen. Much better than windows 8, but I think I will leave my windows 7 machine where it is for now.

Then I went back to the download and it came down in English, I am just on the first page updating, will let you know what happens.

Wise move,

BTW, the link I provided does link to an official Microsoft download, it was just a way of forcing it to download rather than wait for the roll-out.

Hmm that's not good, do you have plenty of room on the PC? It has to make a copy of the old windows installation (approx 35gb) should you need to regress... it's quite big. Does you current windows installation count as genuine 7 ,8, ,8.1? Lots of PC's are running pirated copies with dodgy serial numbers.... Not accusing just asking...

So plenty of room then.... you don't have an old 'windows.old' folder on the C Drive do you? If so that might be stopping the process....

If not it may only have been an interruption in the internet connection that caused the problem then, it has to do loads of look-ups over the connection during installation....

My PC was lacking the last four windows updates due to various problems - all of them were overwritten by the new installation (i.e. loads of problems cured)....

Its OK nothing seems special, it has a few gimmicks.

I had an issue with Microsoft Edge (Internet Browser), its so bloated it regularly freezes.

No problem, I downloaded Chrome which works perfectly.

Once you are happy that your Windows 10 installation is for you - you can instigate a general clean-up and recover some disk space by following the instructions in this link - but be sure once you have deleted older windows versions there is no easy way back.... if you want to.... you could copy your windows.old to a suitable storage device of course....

It's Windows 7 plus and lots of stuff windows 8.1 should have had removed... I find that it starts-up and shuts down about ten times faster than the previous Windows versions which leads me to believe a lot of the nonsense has been removed.
