Spell checker?

Who does not pay attention to their spellchecker? And who doesn't use one.....?

Lodes of powsters r makin cereal errars hand nut bovvering 2 kurect 'em....I know it's a joke.

It's very simple and shows a respect for our mother tongue to take some care. Marions excluded for typing the dark and giving us all some mental gymnastics trying unscramble her Enigma encoded missives - but the rest of us -please review your posts and do us all favour.... tongue very firmly in cheek.

PS No need to post cut and past examples from the internet to demonstrate how we can read crap and understand it even with all the vowels missing or scrambled.....

Practically never use one, because (for example) "there", "their" and "they're" are all correct as far as spelling goes - but all are frequently used wrongly in context......

I rarely ewes wan; I no weather eye have putt the write word inn, and ware too putt it - I don't wont to whined anyone up, butt a chequer past this!

I like to think my spelling is fairly ok, though I do make occasional errors

As written English has been essential part of my working life, and I am also qualified to teach the language, I like to think it is above average. However no-one is perfect and I use the spell check (and sometimes I even refer to a hard copy dictionary when I disagree with the spell check!). Although a touch typist I also make typographical errors , mainly because I learned on an old fashioned manual, not a PC. Like many others I also have words I "blank" - like restaurant and - embarrassingly - Mediterranean.

What annoys me, as I said on another thread , is that I don't have the option of British English with which I was brought up (or as Winston Churchill would not say "up with which I was brought"!)

I agree with Jofra the problem with spell checks is they only do what they say - correct spelling. His example is also a good one, and frequently seen here. I have a programme (see - the spell check wants me to write "program" ) on "Word" which also highlights grammatical mistakes, but I often disagree with it, or have deliberately used an odd construction for effect!

Unless I am in a hurry over an urgent matter, I also usually read my posts to check for errors. Too often, when I come back to the Board and read them again I still find mistakes and have to rush to "edit" in the hope no-one else has spotted them!

My qualification is in ESOL but I have also helped out in the UK with literacy problems. If anyone needs help they can pm me in confidence - no charge as I am retired and don't have a Work Permit , but I welcome help myself with areas where I am weak such as
computer literacy and Turkish

The spell checker when you post on this forum is a function of your browser settings and you can change this to be 'British English' if you wish. Details on how to do this for google chrome are as follows. (from here https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95604?hl=en )

Adjust spell-checker settings

This section below is applicable to Windows, Chrome OS, and Linux only

If you display Chrome in only one language, spell-check is turned on automatically for that language. If you use more than one language in Chrome you can choose which language to use for spell-checking.
1.Click the Chrome menu Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
2.Select Settings.
3.Click Show advanced settings.
4.In the "Languages" section, click Languages and input settings.
5.In the Languages and Input dialog that appears, under the "Languages" list choose the language you want to use and click Use this language for spell checking on the right.

Other browsers will be different but most will allow you to set 'British English' as the spell check option.

Erol:: thanks but I already have English (United Kingdom) set as a language option. However when it underlines in red it gives me language options, but only American English.
