any views on how to eliminate?

Have always found Sertex in grey spray bottle or white/ orange aerosol tin effective and available in most supermarkets. Spray every drain, the skirting and threshold of every room ( you can do inside of cupboards too to kill ants but exercise care not to contaminate foodstuffs), it says its not harmful to pets but I would not allow them into a sprayed room for a few hours. It's supposed to last 3 months.

Ask your local Belediye to send their guys out to spray. You will never get rid of cockroaches entirely - they're one of the great survivors, like rats!

Whatever you do. don't stamp on them, especially a femail - the eggs live on!! (I have no idea how to tell femail from male either) In particular spray around all the lids to your sewage system. I saw a lid raised once and dozens and dozens of the horrors scampered every which way. As Agobard suggests. if you really are infested then the Belediye is your best bet.

I'm sorry Sophie, I'm sure that's a bit of an old wive's tale (no offence intended!). I've stamped on plenty and never seen anything other than a dead cockroach which has then been tissued up into the dustbin.

A local told me years ago to put a small amount of diesel in the drains around the house as thats where they come from and it's worked for me ever since.

Sorry Frontalman, but I have to correct you. Initially as you did, I thought it an old wives tale, however..........

Some years ago I stamped on a cockroach and then went away to get some tissue to clear the dead body away. On my return I noticed a mass of movement a few feet away and discovered they were very tiny cockroaches; evidently they had been ejected from the cockroach as it died. I now use a supermarket spray to prevent/ kill cockroaches.

Try the "Vegas Trap"

Or easier still, cut the top of a plastic bottle, add about 250ml ... of something sweet and sticky, mollasses or Maple syrup ... and add a little water and cover with some Turkish coffee (dry) .. leave next to a drain or against a wall ... then wait.

It works a charm, although better to get the local Belediye in before hand. They do it for free.

Ps If you stamp on them, be sure to disinfect your shoes, after all, they come straight out of the drains. Nasty critters.

I've actually become quite fond of them. We have a pet one in our balance tank. I've evicted all his flatmates but am a little reluctant to get rid of this one, he's such a cutie!

We had a problem with huge cockroaches 12 months ago in a drain system used this unbelievable two weeks not a trace.
You can get the Borax at most Chemist and measure the sugar yourself although they probably will make you up a small jar. I use the chemist in Alsancak opposite Starlings.

Borax + Sugar: The exterminator recommended this mix (3 parts borax to 1 part sugar) because the borax acts similarly to commercial roach killing sprays by dehydrating the pests' exoskeleton. The sugar just acts as a bait. Though borax is a pretty safe product, I erred on the side of caution and sprinkled the mix in all the drain traps and if necessary on empty jar lids in cupboards in high up places. A few hours later, there were dead roaches galore. Bottom line: Amazingly effective.
