Any solution to mould in wardrobes

My neighbour and I are having problems with mould in the wardrobes on clothes and shoes. Does anybody know why this is and has anybody had any success in treating it. We have ust had new wardrobes put in with no back so you can see through to the wall at the back as I thought if we had that panel it would create a barrier and then get a cold and hot spot ans still we are having a problem.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Just leave all the doors open to allow air to circulate. These in built wardrobes are often next to a damp wall that gets no air at all.

If the rooms have air-con, investigate the de-humidifier setting (usually on all models and normally shown as a drip symbol) mould loves damp, hates dryness. Ventilation is good of course unless the rooms are next to a pool which is creating levels of humidity of a totally problematic level.....

To kill mould you can use various curing solutions - in the building trade dilute white spirit vinegar is often employed on mouldy plaster etc.

The proprietary brands employ similar chemicals but mask the vinegar smell with perfume.

if your wardrobes have a back board ie hard board cut this out as it forms a mould between the wall and the board witch then circulates after cutting it out you might need to paint the walls it wont come back then unless you have damp problems from the outside tilling

Hi Gates,

I did exactly that with our new wardrobes. No back and a newly painted wall after a month we started getting mould on the clothes but not on the walls so I am not sure this is the answer. Orignally I thought the same as you and when we had new wardrobes fitted thought this would work.

De humidifier works as well, I have one for sale. Takes up to 8 litres of moisture out per day. Very economical to run.

If you can put vents in sides of wardrobe at high & low level this should eliminate most problems. It should give air movement. Ideally hanging clothes don't need to be packed too tightly & a gap behind allows air to circulate.if there is a partition in drobe, then a couple similar vents in this would help.

The easiest way is to put tubs of rock salt in the wardrobes. The water fom humidity is soaked up and prevents the mould. We put it in all wardrobes and cupboards. Change when salt goes hard.

Dampness in wardrobes etc is usually caused by unseen condensation. This occurs when warm air, which supports lots of moisture hits a cooler surface. The air then loses some of its moisture onto the cooler surface.
A possible solution, is a space behind the wardrobes so they can breathe. Or maybe, a double back in the wardrobes with a space in between, which ideally woud be filled with insulation.
The same applies to the bottoms as some of the cold and damp comes via the floors.
Hope this helps

Pete
