Looked out of the window when I got up & a kingfisher flew out of the ravine & perched on top of our pool ladder for several minutes.
It is our 11th summer in this house & have had only one other sighting maybe 7-8 years ago.

I think you may find that it is a Bee Eater. We have a dozen or so at the moment and we live just above Erols in Ozankoy .

I know I was very bleary eyed & you may well be right but I thought bee eaters were bigger birds this one was quite small.

It's conceivable that it could have been a Kingfisher as they do breed in Southern Europe, but the dry environment here would put off such water based birds I would have thought. They do eat lizards as well as fish though. The bee-eaters have returned so it is likely it may have been a bee-eater. Kingfishers move very quickly so that may be a way of determining what it was. Good luck.

We have seen kingfishers, and young ones, at various places along the coast, Silver Rocks, Lapta near old folks home, and Mare Monte near the cafe. Usually during winter and spring, and again in late autumn.

Have also seen a kingfisher at Shayna beach. It was perched on the ladder also.

When I kept a boat moored in Girne harbour you would often see them around, perched on boats or along the harbour wall rocks. That was 5 years ago but maybe they are still around.

We saw one last week on the beach near Horseshoe Bay. Used to see lots of them in the Greek Islands.

10 years ago there was a Kingfisher regularly on the rocks at Shayna, and also at several locations West of Girne but they disappeared when they cafes etc were updated and morepeople and loud music. Glad to hear there are still some in the country. I was surprised to find they frequent the sea, in my ignorance I thouht they were fresh water fishers.
