Where is the best place to buy a chain saw please? We bought one from the South which has packed in, the repair guy said it wasn't the best buy. Thanks in advance.

Erkdal Enterprises at the crossroads between Girne and Lefkosa are dealers for Husqvarna. Home Centre in South sell Stihl. Husquvarna and Oleo Mac, all decent makes but choice would be first two. Don't forget to register it with the forestry!

Sorry - can't resist it - you won't get one in any UK supermarkets now - not after the Tesco chain store massacre.....

You can buy direct online in the UK, if you have someone who can bring it over for you.

G'day Mollie,

We've got 10 pussycats - all abandoned by their 'caring' owners - chucked out of car windows, or dumped in one of those deep, green Beledere rubbish skips, with no chance of escape.

About the chainsaw you bought, presumably from Homebase - is the brand a 'Performance Power' model - or what make is it?

I have a PP model in working order, but it is an old one. Did the repairman say what the problem is with yours?

What are you going to do with it?

I am interested, because most things are repairable if there are the spare parts to hand.

PLEASE REPLY!

The only two brands to buy in the KKTC are (genuine) Stihl or Husqvarna.

Both are reliable but Stihl has better service here and is more widely supported.

You can buy or order through most yapı markets.

We bought the chain saw in Homebase on the South about 4yrs ago. It stopped working a while ago, we took it to a guy who repairs garden machinery in Karakum, we have used him before and he is good. We called the other day, it was in bits, he said its not worth repairing, it would cost more for the parts than a new one, we ended up leaving it with him. Sorry, don't know the make.

Thanks for your reply Mollie - you left the bits there - don't want to sound sceptical, but I've heard the same story umpteen times before!

As the saying goes 'buy cheap buy twice'.A chainsaw should last a lifetime if the right one is bought for the right jobs.
There is a certified Stihl dealership in Lekosia. The Mediterranean Gardner business in Alsancak is a certified dealer for Husqvana.
These two manufacturers are about as good as it gets and if looked after should last a lifetime.

My little Stihl chainsaw was bought in 1988 and is still percolating 'like a bought one'!

The older models were solid and reliable - not like nowadays.

I do all my own serving of my 3 chainsaws, as well as the neighbour's Makita.

I worked in the forestry in New Zealand and have used many brands - currently, I don't think there's a petrol chainsaw that is as good as Makita [their electrics are goodo, too!] - Paralik sells them in Girne.

The smaller engine size Stihls are very plasticky and frail and my cobber, who's just bought one has had problems with the trigger mechanism from the start, rendering the saw unusable in its present state.

I recently sourced the problem of another friend's Husqvarna. There is a rubber bellows between the carby and the engine manifold - it had split after very little use and the replacement bellows can't be sourced North or South.

Go for Makita if you want engineering excellence and integrity - that's my advice!

'I do all my own serving of my 3 chainsaws'

Whoops - 'serving' should have been 'servicing'.
