Where are the Syrian refugees in TRNC?
A recent report in the on-line New Cyprus Magazine states "The Refugee Rights Association has launched an appeal to help refugees, including children, from Syria and Palestine living in the TRNC... (source: Cyprus Today)".
I didn't know that there were any Syrian or Palestinian refugees living in TRNC - I thought that they had all been sent to Turkey.
Does anyone have any information on numbers, when they arrived, or where they are being kept?

It would be nice to know. I am thinking a little act of kindness over bayram to these poor people might be the way to go. If anyone dose know if there is anywhere we can take some gifts to the children or even so food and clothing. please let me know

Collecting is highly admirable and to be commended. However, the question posed was where are the refugees here? I would hazard a guess and say, nowhere. The TRNC Government's policy has/was/is immediate deportation to Turkey - as if there are not enough there already. At least the RoC Government has accepted refugees and cared for them, albeit they are confined to camps.

If all else fails, first read the instructions. The report gives an address in Lefkosa for donations, and a contact number. The report also says there are fifteen families which is very few people compared with the the thousands of refugees in Europe and could easily not be noticed the mixed population of the TRNC, especially as they probably do not frequent the more affluent areas populated by Brits..
Personally I find the whole refugee problems completely overwhelming, and prefer to stick to Charity beginning at home. At Kurban Bayram, I make a donation to Cheshire Homes which provides vital day care including meals for a core population of very seriously disabled people who would otherwise have no outlet, as well as various facilities and equipment and physiotherapy for various levels of disability, They are constantly struggling just to find the money to keep the Centre going.

Re: Where are the Syrian refugees in TRNC?
Thank you RR.
I did note the contact details for donations; what I wanted to know was whether anyone had any actual information about the total number of people (rather than families), when and how they arrived, and where they are being 'kept' - i.e. whereabouts are they? - are they confined to a secure camp? - are they free to mingle with the general population? - has anyone seen them?
As to the question of Charity, we don't even know what provision the TRNC Government has made for their welfare, so it is impossible to assess their needs, other than the specific items mentioned in the News item, although that is outside of the scope of the question posed in my original post.

Assuming of course if the report is true and the refugees exist.

Re: Where are the Syrian refugees in TRNC?
Actually, Keith, I was responding to the second post asking for details of where to send. Sorry I know no more about the refugees than I saw on the extract posted.
That is one reason why I prefer to make a donation where I have actually seen both the need and the measures taken to meet it, and know how my hard earned and limited money is spent..
However it would be interesting if someone did contact the number and get details.

PS I do think it is a nice idea for expats to show solidarity by helping a Charity at Kurban Bayram. I know some Cypriot who dont like the idea of killing lambs and feel making donations to Charity is more modern but stlll in keeping with the spirit of giving.
