Gas for BBQ

I have just purchased a very large BBQ. When I unwrapped the packaging I noticed the regulator was very different
from the calor gas regulators we have on our hob and old BBQ and I think it could possibly be for butane gas. Unfortunately
there are no instructions with the BBQ in English. Can you buy butane gas here and if so where?

Can you not go online and search the make/model number or change the regulator hose to utilise the old one?

Hi Tom Steel,

I have gone on line and found the BBQ is an American make and the regulator is for butane gas, I don't know if the blue bottle propane gas we get here is the same as butane gas and changing the regulator would be ok and safe.

OK, I did a search on this subject via this forum. The debate was inconclusive. Some recommend a high pressure regulator, others caution against them. Nobody said where you could get butane bottled gas. Sorry I cannot help, maybe others can. Do you have a friendly local Cypriot neighbour who could enquire via the gas-providers?

What ever you do DO NOT ask for a high pressure regulator!
Make sure you ask for either Butane or Propane regulator to suit the gas being used.
I know someone who recently asked for and fitted a "high pressure" regulator and nearly blew his kitchen/villa up.
They sold him a gas welding type regulator. You can guess how far the flames from the burners went.

He was very lucky.

Secondary thought. What does your supplier of the BBC recommend?

If it's an American regulator it will have a large nut on the end which is free moving. Can you not cut the regulator off as close to the supplied one & put the correct one on. That is of course it has a flexi rubber hose.

Whilst you discuss this, could I come in with a quick question.

Would I be correct to say that if I purchased a calor gas fire brand new from say B&Q, would the gas regulator on it be compatible with TRNC gas bottles ??

I think not.i think you would find the thread is male. The American ones are female. Gas bottle fittings are totally different here.

Gas here is not Propane but Butane/Propane blend which is why it does not do so well when it is cold.

Gas outdoors in the UK is Propane where the indoor stuff is butane.

Thanks for all your replies, I bought the BBQ from Halos and will go back tomorrow and ask about the gas I should use.
I don't expect that I will get a sensible answer as I don't think the ladies in the shop will know but I can only try.

We won't be using the BBQ in the winter and maybe just changing the regulator to the type we use here will be ok.

I bought one from Halos a couple of years ago and just changed the regulator to the one's here works perfectly
