Re: KKTC scam
I was just about to text my details through, and I happened to notice your topic, Thank You. Yet it looks genuine ? I can also understand the reason for this because when we first came here you could not buy a Sim card without Passport etc. The Police etc. were then able to trace your phone number etc. from your name or vice versa
I think that should still be applicable, so I just took it for granted Turkcell were just having to reinstate-it.
I am not computer or modern Techno savvy , so just out of interest what do people hope to gain with this information, your credit maybe? or get into your identity even deeper. ??

Re: KKTC scam
Unfortunately, any info we give them is power to them - if it was genuine I think we would have been informed by the govt. - its easy to get pulled into these scams, they seems so reasonable - I'm just glad we were able to warn people - internet scamming is so prevalent these days - we have to be so careful !

Re: KKTC scam
There is actually now a requirement for pay as you go lines to have ID information registered if to be used for longer than 3 months. Lines without the info on file will be deactivated. I know one provider is sending out asking for details to be registered at their sales points. Could it have something to do with this?

Re: KKTC scam
allytt, yes that is what the text is asking for ?? and it states 3 months, maybe a good idea to confirm with Turkcell kiosk.

Re: KKTC scam
Thank you Johnny Lee and Alltt - I posted the thread on advice of a friend, but obviously if there is a genuine requirement for this information it will have to be given. I think, though, that it would be safer to go into a Turkcell establishment and check with them direct, and then if we have to 'register' it is done through the proper channels, rather than just sending a random text to someone - I do hope I haven't misled anyone, if I have I give my sincere apologies

Re: KKTC scam
I suspect its genuine. After all, MM require to see your passport or driving licence with passport number on in order to register with them. Erol said it was a Government requirement. The DL is photocopied and placed on file.

Re: KKTC scam
We actually went in to Telsim yesterday and showed them the message. We were told that we had to register since Telsim had been taken over by vodophone. Later, my son received the same message on Turkcell, for the same reason .

Re: KKTC scam
We went into Turkcell in the high street in Girne and they confirmed that we had to register. Took details off our driving licence - no cost.

Re: KKTC scam
I think it is genuine. We went in to the Girne office yesterday to check, even though we did not get the text message. The girl checked our account and confirmed that it was up to date.

Re: KKTC scam
Definitely NOT a scam, we called in at the Turkcell office today, the guy spoke perfect English, we didn't need to register because we are already on a contract. A friend who is on a pay as you go registered by text, he had a reply in 2 minutes.

Re: KKTC scam
Just need to text your name and ID (we used driving licence number) to 1234 and as said previously you get an acknowledgement back quite quickly.
