How do you keep them alive? as in the UK you cannot let them hibernate till about 5yrs old. Do you use the UV lights and things over here? I am gutted as I had to re-home my 3 yr old to come out here as I live in a first floor apartment

Your babies look wonderful
As I got older I congratulated myself on my tolerance..... Now I realise I just don't give a "ooops"

I had tortoises when I was a child and had always wanted to keep them again.

I put a posting on this board about 3 months ago and a member offered me the 2 that are in the picture.
I am not an expert on babies, but there are quite a lot of tortoise owners here who have given me lots of valuable information.
Due to the mild climate here, a lot of tortoises do not go into hibernation and the advice given is that babies survive better if they do not go into hibernation for their first year, so that is my aim.
Due to my fasination with them I am giving a home to the 2 that are advertised in this post.
If you are ever near Karsiyaka and would like to see them..you are more than welcome.

Many thanks to weddingsnorthcyprus.
I went to collect the 2 baby tortoises this afternoon and actually came home with 3 as another one had been discovered.
They now join my other 2 babies.

They really are adorable!
I could spend hours just watching them.

Here's a picture of them with my first 2 babies.

They do look really sweet we adopted 2 rescue tortoises a few years ago but one of our dogs kept picking them up & bringing them up to the house so we had to re-home them.
They do live to an extraordinary old age so don't forget to set up trust funds for them!

I love them too but am riddled with guilt as a few years back I got two from a pet shop here. One by one they disappeared and then one day I saw one in the garden and ran rejoicing to greet it. When I picked it up its head fell off. Obviously well dead. But how did it get back to where it was when it had obviously been dead a long time. Did someone find it and then go to the bnother of putting it in my garden? Whatever, I would not dare have another, maybe because I DO love them.

I actually have a bank account here that is only used for my pets!!
My husband put x amount into a bank for me which is used only for my 3 dogs, 3 cats, 1 cockatiel, 2 terrapins and now 5 tortoises.
The interest from the lump sum is used for the dogs haircuts, annual booster jabs, parabands, emergency treatment, toys, treats etc.
If ever (god forbid) we had to return to the UK, I know we have enough money in the account to transport what animals we can take back with us.
The bank staff have named the account "Pet fund" and find it amusing what the interest is spent on!

What a sad tale.

From what you said it sounds as if the tortoise you found had gone into hibernation in your garden and had come out too early.

As a child, my sister and I each had a tortoise and they were put in a box in the garden shed for the duratiion of the hibernation season.

I remember being heartbroken and inconsolable when my sister's tortoise emerged and mine didn't.
When I took it out of the box, its eyes were missing

Tortoises kept in a natural, free roaming enviroment (ie garden) will burrow into soil to keep warm during hibernation so you shouldn't feel guilty...its natures way of saying only the strongest will survive.

Well Puppylover I have heard it all now but I am keeping quiet otherwise my pets will insist on their own bank account & credit cards!
I cannot imagine what the vets' bills would be like if we had to move back to UK they were high enough when we moved here 9 years ago.
We certainly would not be able to maintain the high standard of living our 2 dogs + 3 cats currently enjoy!

Totally agree with what you say about the price of UK vets compared to here.
The one thing I have found here is that the vets here (unlike some, not all in the UK) don't play on your emotions when it comes to our pets.

Its christmas time and Scrooge is at home all alone when the doorbell rang.
Opening the door he found a tortoise carol singer.
Scrooge being Scrooge kicked the poor thing and shouted get lost.
Its now Easter, Scrooge was again sat at home all alone when the doorbell rang.
Opening the door was the tortoise again who says "what was that for"?

I thought it was funny!

Thornaby . Was that the same baby tortoise who was sent to the shops by mummy tortoise for a tin of baked beans ? Mummy tortoise asked daddy tortoise "what should they do" as baby tortoise had been gone for 6 months. Daddy tortoise replied "open a tin of peas". There was a scuffling noise at the door, eventually baby tortoises head appeared, and he said "if you do not stop talking about me behind my back I won't be going to the shops".
"profound ? A bird can sing with a broken wing, but, one can't pluck feathers off a frog!
