KAR Announcement - effective immediately
KAR Announcement 2015
Following drastic changes in the minimum cost of neutering implemented by the Veterinary Association it is with regret that KAR have had to make the following changes:
As part of our Cat Neutering Programme those requiring help to neuter street or feral cats members of the public will be asked to make a minimum donation of : Female cat 120TL Male Cat 70 TL
Our Cat Catching team will be reducing the number of reports of cats they will be able to catch and neuter weekly.
There will be no further KAR ‘Tag and Return’ dog programme. In accordance with the TRNC law we can no longer return dogs without owners to the streets. The law dictates these dogs come under the responsibility of the various local Municipalities. As a result the KAR assisted Vet slip scheme for dogs will no longer be available.
KAR support the intentions being taken by individual Municipalities to manage the animal population in their areas and will be more than happy to provide advice and help as and when requested.
KAR will continue to try to help the vulnerable, sick or injured dogs and cats and will work on education, awareness of animal care and the importance of neutering.
KAR would like to remind members of the public that it is not possible for us to offer a 24/7 emergency service. Our Hotline service (0533 8694098) is open Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm for any enquiries or to report incidents.

Re: KAR Announcement - effective immediately
Lets hope the municipalities do help, dogs are easier to remove to contain or put down but the cat population I expect will grow and grow.
A big thank you for neutering the 21 cats in the street where I live, it kept the population under control for almost 9 years. This year unfortunately it has doubled and I already have 6 extra mouths to feed on my front door step, due to them being male they are not there all the time but the noise level has increased with them fighting for territory. Unfortunately working here I have no spare money and will greatly miss this service.
Good luck with the educating programme

Re: KAR Announcement - effective immediately
Indeed a very sad day. Those of us who care about these animals have been increasingly alone, as Kar's hands have been tied even tighter now.
Well I will keep going, and if we cannot afford to neuter then so be it. Home made chastity belts for female cats, I am working on it.
Jokes aside, a big thank you to KAR for the efforts, and a big thank you to all the animal charities here, and to many very pro-active individuals who will never give up

It sounds to me as if KAR are responding to a new Government initiatives and or legislation which I seem to have missed? Can anyone enlighten me? Also has the cost of neutering dogs gone up, and if so to how much?

As far as I know RR, we had our youngest neutered abt a year ago (female dog) and it was around 250tl
Have seen nothing in the press about this either, but we tend not to have much time to read it
Sorry, not v helpful
But I believe Kar would subsidise you if you had found a stray, and this must have come to an end. Will check with Kar ladies at Lambousa on Sat and post back X

Re: KAR Announcement - effective immediately
Am i right when reading this that it means there will be no more street dogs - TAG or otherwise ? If KAR cannot put them back, after neutering them, on the streets because they aren't owned what will happen to them ? Will KAR still collect stray dogs and neuter them .... to do what with them then if they cannot release them ??!!
I have listend to a few discussions tonight and have heard that KAR are not going to collect ANY adults because they cannot neuter them and keep them in their Center nor can they release them as TAG dogs. The beldeyesi will simply eventually collect ALL stray dogs and put them in their own compounds (not built yet) as the law dictates - until they are homed or their compound is full and then what ........ !!!!
This was the purpose of the Girne beledeyesi meeting the other week - to make people aware of what they were planning.
How short sighted of the authorities .... why can't they advocate and promote free neutering for everyone who has dogs.
How disheartened KAR, and others, must feel when all they have been trying to do, the same as many of us here, is to help the strays.
What will happen to all the fat, healthy TAG dogs in Girne town ? What will happen to the dogs in my area who are fed and cared for by locals but are owned by no one. Yes they should be neutered but no organisation but KAR has been willing to help with that - but now they cannot.
How b****y sad.
