how easy is it to get the element inside one of the galvanised tanks changed?
is it an expensive job or straight forward?

Re: heating element in galvanised water tank
On average the normal elements need replacing every 2 years ( sometimes even after 1year) as the limescale in the water furs them up. We had a stainless steel one fitted by Bracey Builders which is now into its 4th year so worth the extra price.
