Car Hire and Transfers TRNC

On my last visit to TRNC at the beginning of October, I had some problems with A1 rent a car and the vehicle(s) they supplied for hire.

The transfer to and from Larnaca was spot on - no complaints.

But when I arrived at the Girne office (around 10:30pm) to pick up a car I was told by the taxi driver it was not available and offered the temporary use of a large 7 seater until the next morning.
This seemed fine as I like to get a couple of bits from the supermarket before opening up my house over there.
Unfortunately the car refused to start after I had done my shopping, so I rang the A1 number and the poor taxi driver (who was on his way home) came back.
After he also failed to start the car he offered to take me home, and told me that a car would be dropped off at 12pm the next day.
This was ok as I had already got some shopping in so I could have a cup of tea etc.

So the next day another car arrived and I thought job done. However, when I came to use the car it had bits of paper stuffed into the wing mirror housings to attempt to keep the mirrors steady as the electric controls did not work. I drove it straight to the office and told them that this was unacceptable. Eventually I got a an acceptable car delivered around 4pm.

So, as well as losing a bit of confidence in A1, I also effectively lost a day of hire car use (still had to pay for it).

Does anyone know of an alternative (reliable) car rental company, who also do transfers for £25 each way?

I used to use Baspinar but they put their transfer prices up to £40 each way.

Or am I being unreasonable?

Any help would be appreciated

I used Aone for the 1st time having read good reports here plus £25 transfers was attractive. As I arrived late evening they delivered car to the hotel the next morning. As I went to walk round the car after noticing a small dent on drivers side the chap said all ok no problems. It wasn't till the next day that I noticed the petrol flap was hanging loose, it still had the cap but the locking mechanism in flap was missing, not a biggy but when you add one of the washers was missing & from experience I don't use washers & don't flip bonnet open. I know the cars are never clean but I was not impressed & seeing as I am over next May will want a better car or another hirer.

I used to use Bird at Karaoglanoglü, they were always reliable.

I don't know what their airport transfer fee is now though.

We use Pacific now after having problems with both AOne and Green Garage, the latter being an attitude problem. Their transfers are £40 each way but that is a private transfer. One of the problems with AOne was sometimes there was no-one to meet us at Larnaca as they were waiting for additional passengers to arrive on other flights. Several times we asked them to inform us beforehand as it is rather disconcerting to arrive and not know whether the taxi driver will be turning up. The last time we used them there was no car available on arrival, so we said 'never again'.

Have always used Bellapais car hire. They may not be the cheapest but are 100% reliable. You get what you pay for.

Another disappointed with A-One; this was the third year in succesion we've used them - 2013/2014 no problems apart from arrival pickup last year - driver a few minutes late, rather worrying. However, this year on arrival, driver again late. Car delivery next day - manual specifically and emphatically ordered - automatic delivered! When we refused that, we were taken to pick up (at a previous customer's place) a manual - which turned out to be filthy and a McDonalds' take-away refuse bin (of course, the customer's fault and not A-One). As we needed to use it immediately. it was arranged that we take it back later for cleaning - whereupon we also pointed out the wiper rubbers were non-existent! It was duly cleaned and new wipers fitted - but almost half a tank of petrol that I had put in seemed to have evaporated.....
If I can find another firm with similar tranfer prices next time, I may well be changing...

Catalkoy Chris, I know it's a bit far out but Acmenya will do a deal with transfers, car hire depending on how long you hire car for. They will deliver to & collect from where you are staying. Not sure how far their limit goes though. Might be worth a try.
