We plan to drive from Portugal back to Cyprus via Turkey and want to know if anyone has a similar experience, we cannot find out if we would need seperate car insurance driving through Turkey or would we need to buy it at the border, any useful comments would be appreciated.

to use certain motorways you need an electronic toll card for the window of the car
Hired a car in Adana and drove to Cappadocia on the main Ankara motorway
HGS is one of the two electronic toll systems you just drive under the sign on the toll booth no stopping

Hi

You can buy insurance (sigorta) at the border. It's a minimum of 3 months and you have to pay in Turkish Lira in cash ( 190TL for us in September crossing from Bulgaria in 1400cc car).

We brought our car from the UK to Cyprus earlier this month, and had to pay TL200 for 3rd Party Insurance in Turkey (for up to three months) at Edirne crossing. Its worth checking where your insurance covers you, mine said EU, Norway and Switzerland, but I know some do include Turkey, and if so you just have to show it to the office.

Also bear in mind that if you drive through Austria, Slovenia, or Croatia you have to have a vignette displayed in your windscreen. These can usually be bought from petrol stations at or near the frontier.

A more difficult problem are toll roads in Turkey. There doesn't seem to be anywhere where you can buy vignettes at the frontier, some roads (like those entering Istanbul) seem to be toll only. Apparrently your supposed to pay at a post office, but worth finding out in advance if you can.
