It's not finished but progress is fast. I had heard that it was due to open by Christmas but not sure how true this is. Such a vast project.

Just passed by. Looks quite a way from being finished but there again, they do work quickly. Hoardes of people landscaping today. Can't wait until they actually put in the entrance road and landscape the front. It's like driving through a dust storm when you go by.
There are several outbuildings that are still being erected too. It's all hands on deck now.

This huge and hideous building is a blot on the landscape that can be seen from miles away. How they ever got permission to build on what was a beautiful natural beach, enjoyed by many people in the Summer months, I will never know. But then of course money buys anything out here!!!

muffin1, your last paragraph answers your question. However, think of the employment opportunities for many locals and the income for the Government coffers.

One would hope that, provided that they have the new 'Smart Meters' installed, that the meters would, quite impartially, cut them off if the bills were not paid ... Image

Maybe someone knows somethimg we dont but who is going to stay in that hotel, however luxurious.....especially this time of year, so why the push to get it finished. I have never seen so many workers/cars.....all beavering away....really quite bizarre..

Maybe as the new hotel is very close to the plant producing electricity it will have its own direct, unmeteted, supply.

There may be an upside to this. With this edifice being built so close to the power station maybe the owners of this Hotel could put the Government under pressure to force the Electric Company to finally fit the new filters to that smoke stack that keeps pumping out all those Toxic fumes, I mean what company is going to stand for all the complaints from hundreds of guests about the smell and chest irritations after spending a week there. We stopped going to Alagadi Beach because of the fumes, my family call it Chernobyl Beach

I went there once and turned back - that definitely can't be healthy.

I hope Mickyw is right as I have just bought a villa in Alagadi and I was only told about the effects of the fumes after my purchase?

I heard that they are not intending to fit scrubbers/ filters to the chimneys but they are allegedly intending to burn cleaner fuel as from January. They should have started burning this in July but it was deferred for six months. I wouldn't hold your breath though, I expect come January there will be another excuse as to why they are not burning it. The last excuse was that it was too expensive to transport?
The new hotel putting pressure on them is the only hope but then if they get the electricity free they will put up with anything and as the intended clientele will be mainland Turks who seem to have no problem with such things, then we may all have to carry on suffering.

The fumes from the electric station wont effect the hotel as the winds take the toxins towards Esentepe and not back to Girne (and the hotel).
This is another casino hotel which will no doubt fly-in mainland Turks for gambling weekends, thus filling beds and turning a profit.
Have no sympathy for the "old Lara beach" owners/management who only run the small beach complex to suit themselves and not the tourists.
This kind of local laziness only discourages tourists from visiting said beach and calls out for development (however obscene it may seem to most)

The same scenario is currently being displayed at Diana Beach (next to the new Sah supermarket in Catalkoy) and within a couple of years I can see another Casino hotel development, but on a much larger scale.

The wind blows in many directions and is often from the east and swirling. In which case - the hotel will be doused in fumes and particulate matter at certain times. I'll never quite understand why it has been built where it is.

There is definitely a push on to get it up and running now... Just hope they water the plants.

On my last visit to Northern Cyprus in August this year ( to see how my renovation of my villa was coming along) I was told by the owner of Kathleen Restaurant in Alagadi that the winds in summer months blow the direction towards Esentepe and in the winter months towards Catalkoy and main land Girne. She showed me evidence of soot on the floors of her restaurant caused from the fumes

I pass the stack about twice a week and have not seen the main stack belching anything for a few weeks.

I googled the name, Elexus, and it brought up a web-site full of information, even suggesting that bookings can be made. Artists impressions are.........very impressive......lol. It is huge, over 600 rooms, so you can al least double the accommodation it provides.....water sports, restaurants, spa. not the sort of place I would ever use, far too pretentious, but lots of people will love it I am sure.

Bookings being taken now 285TL a night for a standard room. I believe one section of the hotel is complete and travel company reps have all stayed there, in preparation for marketing the hotel. Must agree, it does look quite impressive and I don't doubt they will be able to attract plenty of guests. Did note that the air con was centrally controlled, an economy measure used by many hotels globally.Does this mean they are contemplating being charged for their electricity I wonder?

Well we in Esentepe tend to get the wet weather from Girne direction... so that is totally the reverse. i.e. the wet weather in the winter months comes our way from the direction West to East.

We were told this 10 years ago and by and large we have found this to be the case... The idea that wind only goes in certain directions for 6 months at a time is somewhat doubtful. Today very strong winds from the Girne direction... go figure!

I was told by someone in Esentepe belediyesi that we will be getting electric from Turkey at some point and the power station will go. Don't know how true this is though. Sue xx
