I am with multimax and can watch bbciplayer directly from my tv but not itv player or the other channels. Is it possible to set up the vpn on the tv or do I need to do that on the router? If it has to be on the router is there a recommended one I should buy? Thanks

I do not know of any smart TV that allow you to configure a normal VPN on them (like the MM free VPN).

In my view the 'optimal' way to do this, the way I do it, is to use a third party services that uses DNS redirection to achieve the same thing a normal VPN would for specific pre defined services. For me this is a better solution that looking to configure VPN within a router. As long as your smart TV allows you to configure DNS setting manually (which most should - I know you can on the Samsung smart tv I have for example) this would be my recommended solution.

I use a service from a company call streamvia.com - but there are many companies offering equivalent services. StreamVia call their DNS based solution 'smartstream' and the specific UK services it supports are

BBC iPlayer
Netflix (USA version)
ITV Player
4OD
Demand 5
STV
BlinkBox
TVPlayer
TVCatchUp

So this would not work for example with Amazon Prime on your smart TV but as I say there are many companies out there offering DNS based solutions and I am sure there will be ones that do support amazon prime if you search for them.
