Kibtek - Warning
Just a warning to any owners or renters of property who have not got their kibtek bills in the correct name.
Yesterday lunch time without any prior warning, our electric was cut off. As power cuts are the norm here thought nothing of it until it had been off for a couple of hours. I then rang kibtek who informed me that it had been cut off. Apparently when the owner had this house built the building company had the electric connected in their name but failed to tell her that she had to get the name changed on completion. Now, 10 years down the line, the person at the building company has decided he no longer wants his name on the bill despite the fact he has never had a problem with the bill not being paid. We don't have a problem with that but a little warning either from the building company or kibtek would have been appreciated rather than just cut us off. We were one of 7 properties cut off yesterday by same person so am sure there are other unhappy customers out there, hopefully they are all permanent and not short term renters as at least we had some knowledge of what to do. By the time I rang kibtek it was too late to go to Girne and pay the necessary fee 1407TL cost without a TC guarantor as they were just about closing. I eventually rang the usual kibtek number we have when power is off (not Girne office) and after explaining the situation he said he would try and get it re-connected until 10.00am today, he rang Lefkosa and after about an hour he had managed to get us back on with the understanding we would go to Girne and pay money today. Can't thank that guy enough as he was very helpful and fully understood that we needed to have light last night. Unfortunately can't say the same for Girne office, their attitude was tough luck YOU HAVE TO PAY!!!!
I know their is another post in a similar vein at the moment but thought a new one was necessary for the warning.

This is not the first time that this has happened. About 3 years ago, a considerable number of Nokta houses were all cut off without warning. Their electricity bills were all in the name of one of the Nokta directors and he suddenly decided - without telling the residents of the house - to go to Kibtek and tell them he didn't want this to continue.

I know this has been covered before, but I could do with a summary:
Kibtek have just changed my meter and I don't know what I must do next, if anything.

We had ours installed 2 months ago and we had to do nothing at all. Bloke comes and reads it, next day I receive a text to say what I owe and we pay bill. For the first month there was a paper bill as well, but no longer. If you were one of those who didn't reply to their request to let them have your details, then I suppose you have to go to Kibtek office and have that rectified.

I think you will find that "The Bloke" no longer comes to read it.
The purpose of the new meters is to do away with the cost of that.
The information is sent to Kibtek via the mobile phone network, via which they can also cut you off if you are in arrears, at 450 TL, I believe.

If they sent you a text, how did they know your number?
So what do I take with me to Kibtek?

TRNCV If your old paper bill is in your own name or owners name if rented then you don't have to do anything. If it is NOT then you need to go to the office (upstairs) in Girne to get it changed. If you own the property you would need your Kocan and Passport. You will then need to pay a transfer fee of 1407TL unless you have a TC friend who would stand as guarantor and then the cost is 470TL. Discrimination or what!! One rule for them and one for us yet again, think you would be hung out to dry if that was tried in the UK.
If you have not sent the text to Kibtek (via the mobile network) with your details you need to do that now or you won't know how much your bill is and then if you are about 450TL in arrears they will cut you off. The info they asked for was account number - that is Hesap no. on the bill, your name and surname, your email address and text to 9898.
Hope this helps as I dread to think what the scenario would be if you were cut off the day before a Bayram or such like as there would be no-one to re-connect you, not something that can be done by the emergency guys on my understanding.
Just seen your last post, the text was sent to all mobile numbers (via Turkcell and Telsim) a couple of months ago when they started to install the new meters

I think 10 years is enough time for anyone to get their own bill in their own name all responsibility for your own house is yours

Yes I agree with you, however, I am not the owner, she left the island 8 years ago when her husband died and as he had dealt with everything she was probably not aware that there could be a potential problem sometime down the line. Her son took over with getting the property looked after but as he has never lived here and only comes every couple of years he would not have known either.
So as I say, my post was just a warning to anyone who may be in the same position as I was.
