Just posted some cards to the UK and the price for stamps has gone up from 1tl for a small card to 3tl, yes a 200% increase! Just in time for Christmas.

Seems to differ from place to place. I posted 10 cards today and they weren't small either, cost was 2.80tl per card (after post man weighed each one) Don't know where the 4tl per card rumour came from.

Long queues in the Girne P.O. they don't have the proper value stamps ( what a surprise!!) so you get 6 stamps for each letter/card

Sophie. The 4tl rate is not a rumour, this is what I was charged yesterday at Lapta post office on all but two cards which were small and lightweight and those cost 2.80. Last year cards cost me 30tl to post. This year they cost me 117.60tl.

Still so cheap when you think about the distance it is going to travel. Sure if posted from the UK probably be close to £3.

It is not just about the cost, it's about the huge increase by a cynical and greedy govt. Increasing the charge on dec 1 tells you everything. Foreigners equals cash cows. Can't wait to leave.

Couldn't agree with you more trooper, as I said on my other original post yesterday, they knew by raising the price now they would be in for a windfall at our expense yet again, cash cows is all we now are, we really get the feeling we are no longer wanted here. As for leaving, we will be following you.

According to Cyprus Today first increase since 2008, no complaints in previous years when it was cheap and did not cover the costs.

Well, if it was in the 'Cyprus Toady', it must be true. That rag is but a voice for the authorities with no investigative thought within it. Hardly surprising given its ownership.

It is true... first increase since 2008 - so what's the point of this remark?

As for the cost - 2.8tl = approx 50p for international postage, still a bargain.

Do you all really think the TRNC should be subsidising your Christmas card regime... ?

This idea that we are treated like cash cows is wearing thin.

I agree. If you don't like it you can always move on to another country.

The point, you appear to fail to grasp, is that published in the Cyprus Toadey is the last place to get genuine fact. It is a social rag.

Oh I grasp it alright but the point it seems you fail to grasp is that they (Cyprus Today) are right in this instance which renders your 'point' moot...

I fully get the point. However, the CT (singular, therefore, not they) is hardly the publication for believing what is printed therein.

Still begs the question, where are the PO's that are charging 4tl for a normal sized card to UK? I didn't pay that for Australia.

I still say give it to a Charity of your choice. Just send the most important ones or E-mail a Christmas Greeting.

Tom, I missed the grammar lesson - but my reason for using 'they' stands - as I had put Cyprus Today in parenthesis the sentence reads more easily as 'they' because although a newspaper can contain statements both right and wrong those (they) producing it can be more easily identified as the source of the error... In this sense I was referring to the body of journalists who work there jointly as Cyprus Today rather than the paper.

Groucho, please do not think I was attempting to teach you grammar, I am barely qualified in English to even use it correctly even though it is my native tongue. I do not believe CT is a wholly trustworthy source of media reporting, hence my original post (albeit the actual report was factually correct). I think this post has just about run its course, so in hoping you were not offended, I will close.
