Friends of ours went through Larnaca airport two weeks ago, the queue for security was backed up to the check in desks, anybody been through in the past couple of days experienced lengthy queues at security?
Many thanks

We flew out from Ercan and back into Larnaca (arrived last Saturday) after a brief visit to England. The queue for Passport Control was very slow, and they seemed to be scanning every passport.

Going out form Ercan was more concerning for me. I made the security thing 'bleep' twice on walking through(I have had a hip replaced so I'm used to that, ) but they just waved me through without using the 'wand' on me. Convenient for me, but it did make me feel vaguely uneasy. What if I'd been concealing something metal other than a harmless hip joint?

Him indoors makes it bleep every time at Ercan, but he just points to his knee, says "yeni" and he's waved through.

Same here! But in UK, USA or here in Germany I always get the wand treatment.

It does bother me that at Ercan or in Turkey nobody seems to give a damn.

I flew from Ercan into Istanbul on Friday, security at Istanbul seemed a little more rigorous, the queue was slower and I went through the security machine, no problem, the man behind me set it off and he was checked, I even saw one of the security staff checking some ones hand luggage!.

We flew to the States from Istanbul with Turkish Airlines recently and the level of security was very high, rescans of everything at the gate with random searching of hand luggage, and thus long queues. This level of security is just not practical for every single flight, way too expensive and very tedious indeed for travellers. Maybe they step up security at various locations or on various routes as a result of intelligence.

Let's face it, the chances of being bombed or hijacked on a plane are still fairly remote, the world cannot stop because of terrorism. If we are to expect massive security checks every time we fly, then we may as well expect the same every time we attend an event in a major city, use an underground or indeed eat in a restaurant. If air travel is to become subject to ever more tightened security measures that are not targeted according to risk, then the price will rise above that which most of us can afford.
