Each to their own! Everyone is different! What is good for one may not be good for another! And on and on !
Everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and opinions.
All those who know about the fifteen dogs that have been living and surviving here on the streets of Girne and have now been snatched from where they know, to a place with even less comfort, food and kindness, if you think this is OK fine I hope you get a good nights sleep, me and many others will not.
Why, because we care whether we are in the UK, here or Outer Mongolia.
I worked for the RSPCA and I have never known them to treat animals in this way.
Yes before someone comments, euthanasia did happen as a final resort after pursuing all other avenues but this was done in a caring and humane way, not in a cruel way.
Tomorrow is another day and let's pray it will be a better day for the 15 innocent animals.

There are more groups that's KAR trying to assist in this awful matter so I think a great big thank you to Hpoe4pets is also appropriate

Does anyone know the real reason why these dogs have been removed from the town centre.?

Marions has a point - message 42 - in this increasingly litigious society the Municipality (and I suspect cafe owners) could be held responsible if just one dog - perhaps not vicious but startled or frightened into defensive mode - injured someone , particularly a child or a tourist and this round up was probably a knee jerk reaction to such an incident.

Street life really is not ideal for dogs (and dogs that are overfed and too fat are not really healthy or happy) and people who are genuinely afraid of dogs or have allergies have the right to eat without being surrounded by strays. I have had problems with strays, which probably would not attack a human, going for small young dogs on leads.

What is horrific is the conditions in which these animals are now apparently being kept. There is a very encouraging report in last Saturday's Cyprus Today of University Students and a youth group providing kennels and appealing to the public for food for strays in Lefkoşa and Gazimağusa supported by local animal rights volunteers. Could not one of the local universities be persuaded to "adopt" the unfortunate strays of Girne and provide shelter for them.and get permission to enter the premises to feed and talk to them.

This posting just receive d on Facebook, which seems to con firm that the Mayor had a difficult situation to deal with: "Girne Kyrenia I heard that Municipality is taking care of them.It seems like they are well fed. So many of them on the streets. Two people were attacked by the dogs last week. Some residents trying to understand why so many dogs should be allowed on the streets. My neigbour's dog was attacked by a stray pitbull three weeks ago.School children that are waiting at the bus stops afraid of dogs especially early in the morning.Scary.

Some of you may remember"Pot Belly" who was removed to KAR about 18 months ago for biting someone, and could be aggressive to certain people as are many of the dogs there, but not all. My wife and my two dogs on leads was attacked and badly shaken by the three dogs at the Round tower so there are issues and obviously something bought this to a head.

Assuming the dogs have bitten a number of people I can't see what other option the mayor had.

Dogs roaming in packs are extremely dangerous animals.

The first word in your post Art says it all. ''Assuming''.
How do we know this is what happened and why have fifteen dogs been rounded up.
I have asked for help from the local Animal Charity who went into Tatlisu and she has already been in touch with the Mayors office.
She has been told this place is going to be the 'temporary' pound until the new one has been built and it is any ones guess to how long that is going to take.
They have admitted that the conditions are not ideal and she is going in on Thursday to see for herself.
I have asked her to keep in touch.
The truth of the matter may be that this is the start of emptying the streets of all the animals, as simple as that.

Thanks for the update.

As you know I don't condone any form of animal cruelty and being a dog lover I'm very concerned about these poor dogs.Maybe the mayor has acted hastily and has just panicked.

From what I've seen of Girne he appears to have previously done a great job to help the street animals so why the sudden change of mind.

I have a number of concerns

1, The fact there was a total sweep of these animals without any contact with KAR as to the tagged dogs
2. Some of the Town Centre Dogs as they are known are fat, happy, cared for and loved. I spoke to some holiday makers who looked forward to meeting "old friends"
3. I am concerned as to the conditions they have been dumped in.
4. I am concerned as to whether there has been any thought given as to mixing un-neutered males and females. If there hasn't, then there will be carnage and fighting with resultant pups being born and possible gang raping of females. Make no mistake, it happens.
5. The main blame is on local population who open their gates, let their dogs out and they gravitate towards the centre because that is where food and shelter can be found. The same goes for dogs around the old harbour. Some of them have been there years and are well known and looked after.
6. A sweep of this kind would appear to me to be a panic reaction with no thought behind it and which has done more harm than good.
7. The lovely old dogs who just loll around all day, will be completely traumatised by now.

For those in earlier posts who have referred to "wild dogs" in the street. You could not be more wrong. We have unwanted and unloved dogs, born of ignorance and cruelty, we don't have wild dogs.

As of 09.30 Jan 20th 2016 .....On behalf of everyone at KAR, and more importantly the Kyrenia town dogs, THANK YOU everyone (individuals, groups and organisations) who have voiced their concerns, in whatever way, about the recent situation.
Whilst it is very early stages there has been ongoing intensive discussions/liaisons between KAR and Girne Belediyesi. As a result of this there has been some developments. The KAR Community Warden and colleague from Girne Belediyesi are going up to the "site" this morning. It has been agreed that some of the dogs can be returned to Girne town - today.
We will keep people updated as/when we can - we hope that you can all appreciate that we are trying our best and everything needs to be done in conjunction with the authorities.
KAR account is just for posting and not responding to queries. Contact our Office for information.

Thank you KAR for that update. For those who criticise KAR and would prefer that all strays are euthanized perhaps they will now appreciate how much work goes on behind the scenes to keep within the law here but act in an humane manner, against all odds. KAR treads a very fine line as anyone will see if they go up to the Centre which is now simply bursting at the seams due to the amount of pups that are being dumped and rescued.

A huge thank you to KAR, who already have enough problems as Sophie has pointed out.

I do hope the Mayor makes a statement to everyone. I am sure he was doing what needed to be done as he saw it, as he has the overall repsonsibility for the town. And it is good that discussions can happen and compromises made.

It would be interesting to know how many were tagged dogs and how many not, but in a way that is irrelevant . Maybe the tagged dogs will be returned and others not. Anyway, thanks again to KAR .

Sophie is so right about the fighting that might ensue and harm done to other dogs. Maybe the municipality had already thought of that but not had time to sort out the matter completely.

But I still won't be walking my dog down the High Street and I do confess I find it intimidating when crossing the square with her, mainly because I know that most of the dogs are not family pets and not trained and I have a yellow streak down my back.. Maybe the day will dawn when they are , as in other countries, but for now, trnc is doing its best with the help of agencies such as KAR AND MANY CARING PEOPLE.

Thanks to KAR for update

Sophie you raised the points that I spent a sleepless night worrying about, ie are they neutering dogs that have not been & are they segregating males & females as you pointed out this could have disastrous results for the females.

Twenty years ago this rounding up would of gone virtually unnoticed, I for one not a massive lover of new technology am very grateful for the impact we have with access to social media sites

I think the "General" rounding up of the town dogs is simply a knee jerk reaction by the Girne Municipality. It is easy work to catch a fat old happy dog that has its trust in people, then its job done for the day and back to the coffee shop without a thought of what has been accomplished.

Many people moan about the "Town Dogs" but they are simply the Islands characters, in the same way that the old scruffy guy you used to see on his stool at the end of the bar was - had a tale for everyone and was happy to accept a beer and offer friendship in return!

Everyone moans about the concrete jungle that is appearing everywhere now, it is the change in a way of life that is not pleasant to see happening. Leave the town dogs alone to be fat and happy and see out their lives - don't change their way of life that has such a good effect on the majority of people who see them. They will not be there forever and I hate the thought that they will be replaced with a fiberglass (or concrete) model of what used to be!!

The dog packs are a different issue and should be dealt with, along with the owners of the dogs that are let out to run free - that is another story indeed!!

Thank you KAR and all who are involved in this action.
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

Just copied from fb pm's ..............Hi Maria here, myself and Agnes went up to see the dogs and took photographs. Agnes has returned there with the dog lady from the Belidi office. There is a statement being published by them and will be sent to Cyprus Today and translated into English from the Belidi office. We were told that only 1 dog had bitten 1 person but there's no evidence of this so far. Agnes has gone back with her and Ali from the Tower for clarification of which dog it was. They have stated that all the dogs apart from this one will be returned to the town. Thank you for all your support.........RESULT well done to everybody

Well done everyone, looks like all of the street dogs have been tarred with the same brush, and it still has to be verified that someone was bitten...........
