Just been watching the Up-Helly-Aa webcast and someone sent a tweet from North Cyprus signing himself as "Fifer". Anyone know who he is?

Thanks. I am living in Shetland now. We lived in Lapta for 4 years between 2007-11. Surprised anyone in TRNC has even heard of Up-Helly-Aa!

Not been to Shetland since my last flight home from Ninian Central, via Unst, in February 1996 but have always enjoyed the spectacle of Up-Helly-Aa - it was great to be able to watch it via the podcast last night.

Next up is Edinburgh's Beltane Fire Festival, on the 30th of April.

Can't think why you would be surprised Waarigeo, the world is a small place these days. I've certainly heard of it, but never been to Shetland.

Lived and worked in Shetland for 2.5years. Great place. Went to Up Helly A twice....freezing, sleety night.......

The land of the simmer dim...........long light summer nights, very short winter days...........strange dialect, more akin to Scandinavia.....plenty of fiddle playing groups.....drove 25 miles from Sumburgh to Lerwick to get a chinese takeaway!

Great place, lovely golden sand beaches....if only the weather was better.

I must say that this is absolutely fascinating!

I'd never even heard of it, and had to look it up on Wikipedia

...although I'm waiting for someone (who shall be nameless ) to come along and ask "What's this got to do with TRNC?" Image

There's a good detective series currently airing on BBC called 'Shetland' very atmospheric it is too... No doubt at some stage, a body will discovered on the burned-out boat!

Thank you for the recommendation of the programme Groucho. I like detective stories, and was running out of things to watch on BBC. I have not really got to identify all the regular characters yet, coming to it late, but it is good, and as you say, atmospheric.
