I have read the threads re poor TV reception via internet. When I come to NC, I would ideally want the UK terrestrial channels and BBC4, but understand that BBC iplayer is blocked abroad. Too bad, as I would be happy to pay for this, even with patchy internet service.
Despite all the problems, having no TV at all during winter evenings in NC may not be a good idea. The different services on offer (via internet and satellite) are confusing so I will probably have to wait till I get there to decide.
So my question now is: Should I bring a UK-purchased TV (over 6 months old) to NC, or should I buy a TV there? I will be shipping other goods as well, so there would be no additional transport cost. I understand the license fee is £10 on imported TVs.
If I bought in UK: Would a normal flat screen TV with HDMI sockets be sufficient to take either internet+tvbox or satellite service? I would also buy a TV that is ‘iplayer enabled’ just in case the BBC changes their policy.
Is there any reason it would better to wait and buy a TV in NC instead?
A confused blueparrot thanks you all for your advice.

If you already have a tv, then bring it, otherwise there's no point in paying for a digital terrestrial tv' - cos we don't have that here!
ALL of the features of a 'smart tv' can be replicated with an android box or a mag box, so don't bother paying out more money for iplayer!
If you buy another tv here, go for the cheapest- I would defy the average viewer to see any difference, and you avoid the risk of breakage, plus you get a local guarantee in case of any problems

If you use an iPad you can download from iPlayer no problem, or at least the wife can, I don't touch anything 'iHostage'. It will be well worth bringing one of the small leads so you can plug this to an HDMI cable for the TV.Keithcaley wrote: ALL of the features of a 'smart tv' can be replicated with an android box or a mag box, so don't bother paying out more money for iplayer!

Certainly would not pay extra for a 'smart' TV as they are nowhere near as smart as an android box, and the android box gives you pretty much everything you may ever want. The saving by not buying a smart TV more than covers and android.
As a fall back, and for news etc, we also have Nilesat. Enough TV for most of the time for us, one off installation of about 400-5ootl I think it was, but honestly not sure as exchange rate changed a little since it was installed. This can connect directly to a modern TV with no extra box.
The wife keeps complaining I never listen to a word she says ............. or something like that.

Hi blueparrot,
If you're looking for an Android Set Top Box that gives a lot,
have a look at NVIDIA SHIELD
https://shield.nvidia.co.uk/android-tv#x
KODI is pre installed in the NVIDIA SHIELD.
What is KODI?
Have a look here.
http://www.wirelesshack.org/a-guide-to- ... shows.html
More KODI info.
http://www.google.co.uk/search?sclient= ... qCvEyq78pY
All you should ever need, with a good internet connection
To watch everything, on a basic flat screen TV.
If you have a Smart TV, KODI may already be installed.
You can set the Android box up in UK, before you leave,
then just plug it in when you arrive.
KODI and all the addons/apps you'll need are FREE.
Good luck.

Re: Buying a TV – UK or NC?
I think someone just wanted to know if their uk tv would work here.
Keith answered the question perfectly-and then the iPTV sharks that lurk on this forum jumped in with superflious info.
Leave it out guys.
