I remember 20 years or so ago in the UK, a device was being sold that claimed to reduce your phone bill almost the nil.
the claim was that using the phone sent pulses along th line, and the device sent reverse pulses to cancel them out.
Of course it didn't work at all, but I knew a few people that bought them.
