However, I think that the poor sod needs an actual Human Being who understands the things to help him!

I'm sure that he's got all the written explanations in the World and they still mean ZILCH without a bit of insight from someone else...

I had thought of starting to explore the subject some time ago, but decided that my old grey cells just couldn't stand the strain.

I believe these are comparable to the Raspberry Pi, which are mini-computers running on a Linux type operating system - as such, with both, programs can be written to perform various functions - if appropriate plug-in accessories are obtained, they can then act/perform as VPN's; weather stations, security monitors, home service controllers - you name it, there will be something that it can do....
There are websites and magazines devoted to both Raspberry and Arduinos and the things that they can be used for - a friend has a raspberry Pi working as a VPN/internet TV device accessing a multitude of international internet TV channels....
I've got a Raspberry Pi, and I've not even begun to discover what they can do - or cannot do....

I did my first programming course when I was 16 (1963). After university (BSc Electrical Engineering) I was employed by Plessey Automation as a programmer. The computers had 8k of memory and we worked in machine code, all in binary.

I finally closed my company in Germany in 2014, when I moved to the TRNC.

After offering to help John, I’m thinking of starting a weekly or monthly meetings (self-help) for people interested in developing project using the Raspberry Pi and/or the Arduino Uno.

So if anybody in interested the send me a PM.
