Came through Metahan to day, went to Ikea bought some goods as you do, on the return, we were stopped, car boot searched and had to pay import duty of 30% vat on goods that were in the car.

Interesting enough they were NOT doing the same on the Greek side, so cigs and cheap booze are still flowing South,

[flash=]You have been warned !!![/flash]

Presumably you were over the limit then?

No, not over the limit , vat is playable on Non personal items, if you cannot wear it, it's taxable.

Now that's an interesting definition!

I always thought that 'For Personal Use' was to distinguish such items from those items intended 'For Trade Use' - e.g. 'resale'...

They once let me through with a plastic shed, and I did tell them what it was when they asked!

Perhaps they thought that I've got weird dressing habits

I do hope that they don't come around on a Sunday Image

I also went South today and got stopped both ways! The Greek customs searched everything including under the back in the boot where the spare tyre is kept. On our return it was just the boot that was checked and all of our shopping that was in full view in cool boxes and bags on the back seat were ignored.

Oh the vision, the plastic shed being a tight fit

Well I thought so too, one item was a rug from Ikea, tax was 105 Tl plus the cost of rug 130 Euros.

I also have brought back large items e.g. Gazebo 3 metre square flat pack cost 168 euros in the past, no tax paid,......

I questioned the fact that it was just for my own use, BUT rugs apparently are classed as furniture.

But they did calculate the amount to be taxed minus the 19% vat I had paid in the South @108 Euros.

It could be that this is just a manifestation of the usual situation where the rules are interpreted differently by different officials, due possibly to 'less than optimal' training and dissemination.

In other words, 'What they don't know, they make up as they go along'...

- perhaps they're getting antsy about "terrorism" and smuggled weapons and/or destructive substances....

I think that you're probably right Jofra, I'd been thinking along the lines of 'people' rather than weapons, but I think that you've hit the nail on the head.

Possibly 'tutor4u' was the victim of opportunism, & sheer bad luck!

...and Dalartokat... the shed is getting a 'bit tight' around the hips - I think that it must have shrunk

- or maybe it's all those chips...

I have always be a suspicious guy at heart - probably why I am still alive - but as the "Peace Talks" come closer and closer to an end I just wonder if this latest purge by customs on both sides is a simple "Make hay while the sun shines" attempt a coffer filling?

I was also stopped yesterday but as the customs guy was about to speak to me a yellow van beside me started happily beeping his horn at the car in front, the customs men were straight on top of him and giving him his "Rights" in very loud Turkish - they just told me to "Move along Sir" and away I went.
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

Surely, if the TRNC is not in the EU you can quite legitimately purchase your goods VAT free when visiting ROC, just tell them you are from a non-EU country and insist on the reduction before you pay? This would then offset any possible VAT charges TRNC might impose on the items upon your return. This happens all the time, when for example Norwegians visit the UK and go on a shopping spree!

It doesn't stop them imposing punitive Import Duties (which may have been the case) and also doesn't take into account the 'Green Line Regulations' agreed by the two sides (and displayed prominently at the crossing points / 'borders') which regulate the type and value of goods which are allowed across in either direction.

It also doesn't allow for the variation in understanding / interpretation of the regulations by individual officials, as I mentioned earlier. These people are like Gods in their own little domains - logic will get you nowhere.

Not a good idea to go to IKEA right now then for flat packs! I have a couple of ultrasonic pigeon deterrents to collect tomorrow from South, so I had better leave the pigeon poop on the car so as to explain they are for personal use, or perhaps they would say they were electrical? Actually they are solar powered! But clearly best to avoid the boot, for anything of interest including pork chops. I believe this was all triggered by tightened security.
