Re: Announcement in Lapta
We have Turkish builders working here and through broken English I think they say it's either a warning of one to come estimates 6.9 or there has been one

Not had one according to this http://earthquaketrack.com/p/cyprus/recent
6.9 is at the top end of strong rating so it would cause a fair bit of damage, hopefully they're wrong.

Yes I suspect its the Civil Defense exercise this pm. I shall be leaving in about an hour to go the C.D HQ to get made up with false blood and all the other things associated with a disaster. I hope that enough foreigners show an interest and take part. They do terrific work and should be encouraged. 6.9 on the scale would make sense to have an exercise.

I do so wish these announcements were also in English. Mind you, we get them from Alsancak and not even the locals who speak Turkish can understand them, so........................ What a relief to know that we are ot getting a 6.9 earthquake today. But why on earth announce it in Lapta???
Ah well, I can sit back and enjoy my evening telly without wondering if the ceiling will come in on me!

The fact they do a drill is positive. I would have thought that this was likely to be a means of communicating to get the team together. This would also be a way of making people panic. Still using the system and for all nationalities. Like prior to the message 3 horn blasts followed by the message in Turkish so that those that need the precise message still have that ( it's up to us to learn the language not be nurse maided by them-no I don't speak it) then 3 blasts at the end. So all are aware of what it's about and know that it is an exercise

Valid point, because i just don't even try to listen any more. It is indiscernible - so I guess harm could come to me in spite of any 'warning'. Suggest you pass on this idea to the authorities!
