Hi

Is it possible to purchase a fire extinguisher, as required for gas tank, in Girne or can it only be obtained from Lefkosia please?

Thanks ☺

Hi Harita, how are you doing?

That was a copy of the entry in the TRNC Online telephone directory - you don't have to put '0392' in front if you are ringing from a landline - I think that they assume that you know how to ring a landline number from a mobile...

But thanks for pointing it out.

Best regards,

Keith.

These are supposed to be refilled every year. I can't even lift mine. If you think in a fire I am going to try to lug it to the tank, which is the specified distance from the house (what ever that is!) FORGET IT!!!

Dry powder fire extinguishers definitely do not need to be refilled every year.

Fire extinguisher servicing should be carried out once a year to the standard laid down under BS 5306-3:2009. The service procedure involves thorough checking of the fire extinguisher for corrosion and partial or complete discharge.
1.Visually inspect the fire extinguisher for corrosion and damage.
2.Check that the extinguisher has not been used, by checking the following: ◦Safety pin and tamper seal are in place.
◦Pressure gauge reading (indicating needle should be in the green area. This is not applicable for CO2 fire extinguishers)

3.Check that the operating instructions on the extinguisher are clear and legible.
4.Remove the discharge hose and check for blockages and corrosion. Once the discharge hose has been removed replace the ‘O’ ring.

5.Weigh the extinguisher and record on the service label. ◦If there is more than a 10% weight loss, investigate and recharge.

6.Wipe down the extinguisher.
7.Ensure that the wall mountings are secure and in good condition before replacing the appliance back on the wall.

Every five years water, foam, powder and wet chemical extinguishers require a detailed examination including a test discharge of the extinguisher and subsequent recharging.

Are you talking about the UK here, or actually quoting the TRNC rules?

I should have been more clear.
Generally:
The standard practice in the UK is that there is no need for annual refilling if it has not been used.
But every five years a test discharge of the extinguisher and subsequent recharging is necessary.
There is no valid reason why the TRNC should be different.

Does anyone know the actual rules pertaining here in TRNC?

Owl Lady - was it the Fire dept or the chap who sold you the extinguisher who told you that 'These are supposed to be refilled every year' ?

I do appreciate that from a physical and practical point of view, the UK guidelines make perfect sense, but that rarely applies in TRNC...
