Disabled/Wheelchair access to Bars and Restaurants

As some of you may know, my wife is virtually wheelchair bound. This means that when we go out we appear to be limited in our choice of bars or restaurants.

I was thinking of compiling a list of Bars and restaurants that cater for wheelchair bound patrons.

As an example;

Freddys in Alsancak

Easy wheelchair access from car park to external covered area.
Ramp access to bar and inside dining area.
2 of the 3 toilets have wide access suitable for a wheelchair.

Blue Song Lapta

Easy wheelchair access from car park to internal bar and dining area.
Single step to front grass area.
Rear and side terrace easily accessed from inside.
Toilet access not possible with a standard size wheelchair so some walking would be involved.

Rosys Bar Lapta

Very difficult access to bar as car park area is not paved/slabbed.
No Ramp access from car park, 2 high steps
Bar area floor surfaces uneven.
Toilet access very difficult as they are situated of the car park, to get to toilets you need to exit the bar via 2 high steps then crossing the car park to the toilet building. The Ladies cubicle was not wide enough for wheelchair access so some walking is involved.

If you have experience of other bars or restaurants please post details or even email them to me at emineden@hotmail.com and I will start to compile a list.

Greatt idea!what we find difficult is toilet facilities. Some new places have just one toilet up stairs and in one case it is a winding staircase with no handrail.
But very helpful idea and b I look forward to the last on kibkom.

Silver rocks is ok,Jashans if you park down the side where Riaz parks that way you avoid the gravelled car park.

Excellent idea emineden: Just a thought have you checked if any of the travel agents (for instance Saga for older people) are already covering some of the ground or you could unite with them?

Can you include notes for all disabilitites, not just wheelchair bound. I for instance cannot get up or down steep stairs for toilets. Also shops and supermarkets - the stairs at Mr. Pound are a problem and although Sah has ground floor disabled toilets last time I checked they were locked. Also might be worth contacting the Turkish Cypriot Association for the disabled.

You wouldn't like it Bavaria then RR. Almost every restaurant or cafe has toilets upstairs or downstairs. No fun for me until I had my knees replaced.

Excellent idea.Regrettably I suspect your list of suitable restaurants will be short! Unce Sams, Avanti and Shooters all have toilets upstairs! The Kitchen next to Supreme has wheelchair access and the toilet is on the ground floor so that might be one for you.

Alan finds the toilet at silver rocks ok and as for shooters he uses the toilets at mani pen which ate groyne for.
Also at avanti they let him. Use The toilet on the ground floor.
Uncle dams is just impossible and I don't understand why a new place does not cater for handicapped.
Sadly also the lovely cinema at Karaoglanoglu its a no no too.
Oh and Gloria Jeans had s ground floor toilet for handicapped.

A shame there are fewer responses to this post, particularly as a few years ago North Cyprus was talking about specialising in holidays for disabled people. Some of the older places would be difficult to adjust, but we really neeed some thought about new build - including I including suspect domestic - as a recent post showed lots o able bodied people cant carry gas cylinders up flights of steps! What price joining the EU?

The Courtyard at Karakum is ground floor - ample parking some only feet on paving slabs from the front door - though you might well have to ask someone to move from the circle of wagons (alias 4 x 4s) round the front door, The ladies' loo, however, is probably too small to get a wheelchair in. The swimming pool area is up short steps, though I have seen someone get to it in a wheelchair by accessing a soil path round the edge, or possibly it could be done from the challets at the back.

Riaz at Happy VAlley Catalkoy is not everyone's taste, as not much glamour but one of my favourites for good food and service, and Ample parking on gravel . Outside eating area and access to resteraunt on stone slabs. Again, however, small inconvenient ladies' loo.
