water tankers - concern

is it a rumour or true?

several companies are only getting a couple of tankers a day from their wells and with far more than 2 customers a day this will obviously cause a back log.

I have had several customers with holidaymakers staying run very low on house water but luckily so far the mains water has come on after 3 days,
The owner suggests get a tanker to which I am being told the wells are dry and it will be delivered in 2 days which to me will be pointless as holiday maker will be very unhappy and the mains back on.

I was talking to Mehmet Gagari from Karsiyaka today - he has several wells and absolutely no problem. I asked him because he is about 1 km from me and my own well is not producing as normal - I usually get about 1 ton per day in summer but only maybe 2/3 ton at the moment. It is just enough but any further drop and Gagari will be getting a call from me.

Still driving, still delivering. Last year he built a 10x5 pool for my friends and did a brilliant job.

A funny little old man but over the years I have found out a lot about him and his life and nobody could fail to admire him.

Mem's wells are probably ok because he is closer to the reservoir, and the ground seepage from there will be enormous, and even more now.

Apology accepted, All I really wanted to know if I was being told a load of tosh or its something I really have to get plan B in place especially where some villas rely on tanker water for household use too.

with the amount of pools on this island and nobody has replied saying yes I have had to wait 5 days I am beginning to wonder if there are other factors to take into consideration.

In Esentepe the water situation is dire. We live outside the village and had to plead for water to be switched on after 10 days. As we are on mains and not regular customers of delivery tankers, they refuse to come which I've tried to explain to Belediye. They say water from Turkey will be on around Bayram but according to Cyprus Today it'll be August before it's switched on. The village and other outlying areas don't seem to be so badly affected as they are supplied from different wells.

Take your choice as to who you believe, but according to LGC News, water delivery from the new Turkish supply has just started. Initially to Famagusta and Guzelyurt but imminently to other municipalities that have signed the subscription agreement - Esentepe is in that list.

From what I undertsand from the locals, it will still be illegal to water gardens, fill pools etc. with mains water - despite you are paying for each ton and there is supposedly plenty to go around. This is because the government must keep the tanker service alive as it is the only way to get water to fires away from residential areas (your pool will be emptied by firefighters if you are near a fire). Tanker drivers are obliged by law to take water where requested by the fire services - if the tankers disappear there are no hydrants out in the wild lands. But if there is plenty of domestic water then the tanker drivers may be less fussy soon about where they will deliver.

It would be good if the Belediye could provide a water delivery service for pools from existing wells at a better rate (same price as mains water per tonne) to discourage pools from being filled using the treated water coming from mains. That is once the Turkish water is available.

Shame that whilst running new pressured pipes all over the island no-one had the foresight to install fire hydrants at strategic places.

The people trying to run things here really should get some professional help and advise with projects.

Your suggestion is exactly what the government wants to avoid. If your idea was taken up then the current water tankers would disappear and it would be impossible to use fire engines away from populated areas.

Unless of course the government bought all the tankers, found places to park, maintain and fill them, and drivers to take them where required on the odd occasion when they become necessary.

Remember that swimming pools are not exactly part of local culture.

Your comment about seepage from the dam is an excellent one that hadn't crossed my mind before - I think you are probably very right and Gagari has a future filled with unlimited water.

Fire hydrants aren't a problem where most of the new pipes have been run and I suspect that under the fairly frequent inspection 'boxes' there is probably some access for the fire brigade. The problem is up in the mountains and the wild country where there are barely tracks never mind roads.

It's big business out this way, don't forget that there are also lots of villas here relying on tanker deliveries for house water. It would be beneficial to them to get water at the same price as those on mains water rather than having to pay way over the odds for water (20TL per tonne in some cases).

I don't see how tankers could match the price as it is a very manual process - filling the tanker from the well, fuel to get to and from, the amount of time it takes to transfer the water to the pool, the cost of maintaining the vehicle, etc.

I have no problem with informing owners they need a tanker but to say yes you need a tanker but to say the wells are dry therefore I can't get a tanker to find out their neighbour can get a tanker.

confused why a tanker will not come out, after all its business whether its regular or not.
