boat licence trnc

can anyone help me. I will be bringing a boat (10 ft cheap old dinghy) over to TRNC as part of my household goods consignment as i have purchased property out there. I will also have a used 4hp outboard. Im interested if anyone knows if i need a licence to use it in the sea and where can i launch it from? any sensible help and advice greatfully received. thanks. Ralph.

Not of this is up-to-date (it's 7 years since I owned a boat here) but it's a starter for you.

Go down into the new harbour, turn left (before the marina entrance) and drive straight to the end and park. There are a couple of cafes and an arrival terminal and on the left facing the sea is a single storey building - this is where boats are (were) registered (and the licence paid) annually. They have (had) English speaking staff and should be able to help you.

As to launching, there is a bit of low beach between Lapta strip and Karsiyaka where the locals launch but I have never looked at it closely. Also the old Sunset Beach (now the Auction House) had a lauching ramp which I guess must still be there but I don't know if they still have any arrangement for people to use it.

My recollections of boat registration are the same (and from the same era!) - registrations are renewable each January, and there are rules which specify the size and placement of the vessel's name / registration number, and (I think), what flag you should display.

You are supposed to present the boat for inspection, but a photograph will probably suffice.

... and quite a few owners of small boats launch their craft from the section of coastline between the old Mare Monte hotel, and the Lambousa Fish Ponds.

Access is via 'Bahçeli Sokak' which runs to the right of the SIBA compound in Alsancak - see 'map', attached - this Sokak is not for the faint-hearted!

I forgot to mention that boats have 'Koçans'! - which are the registration documents issued by the Harbour Authorities, and it might pay to keep a waterproofed photocopy actually on the vessel. I was never challenged, but you never know...

This is a hard question to answer, I owned a boat for 18 yrs in Girne. It started out haveing a Turkish reg as I bought it in Turkey ( 10.5 mtrs ) I had to pay inport tax for it. After a couple of years I went to the harbour master to pay my reg fees which had been $ 75 up to 2009 to be told they had gone up 750 TL. I managed to register the boat in the uk with SSR ( small ships register ) for 5 years for £5 per year at the end of the 5 years I thied to reregister but the SSR office had move to the DVLA and they wanted a copy of amenities bills for my uk address which I did not have any in my name, so using someone elses address is impossible.
When you arrive and have paid the inport duty go to see the harbour master in the new harbour, just inside the gate turn left by the police block it is the large building at the end with a weather station at the side, go upstairs and speak to anyone you find they will direct you to the right person. I forgot you will need the papers for the engine as well showing duty has been paid.
I hope this is of some help as we sold the boat 2 yrs ago getting to old to cross the water to Turkey.

I forgot to mention the Coast Guard do stop and check boats for reg docs, life jackets, the harbour master will inform you what you will need on board.

Boat registration is another half hearted affair. Some are registered and some are not. Most local non commercial boats appear not to be,

launch sites:
Best one is west of lapta strip immediately after silver rocks restaurant. It is a military managed site. Billy is the manager. good concrete slip into small harbour.
300 tl for 1 year license.

so are you all telling me i need a licence, registration, flags, engine docs etc etc for a 10ft fishing dinghy (which will be put on trailer and taken back to house after each use)??

Not if you don't get caught!

Seriously, every vessel should be registered with your nearest Harbormaster, and to do this you will need the importation documents for the boat (and engine according to 'Karmels' - he would know better than I would, 'cos I've never had a boat with an engine). I don't believe that it is compulsory to fly a flag, but if you do, better make sure that it's the correct one!

Anyway, you originally asked if you needed a 'licence' for the boat.

The short answer is 'YES' - although it is actually a Registration document called a 'Koçan', not a Licence as such, and you need to renew it annually.
