Flood warnings lead to the closure tomorrow of TRNC schools

Due to very heavy rain and flood warnings from the Meteorological Office, the Ministry of Education has just announced that all primary and middle schools, regardless of whether they are state or private, will be closed tomorrow (Thursday).
Seeing as Necat College, ESK and Girne American College all have primary/middle school sections it will almostly certainly mean their high school sections will also be also closed.

Better get the buckets out then to deal with my basement flooding! But why the heck close the schools on a weather forecasst? A far cry from my school days when one went regardless of anything, and of course during the war years, schools carried on regardless of potential bombs. Everyone had guts then. Or were they stupid?

Marion, I think it's more to do with getting vehicles off the roads ... many are likely to be impassable tomorrow.

that makes sense. I forgot cos I used to walk to school. Actually in some of the areas such as Karsiyaka and even Lapta people are poor enough that they walk to school, but I rekcon in some places such as Lefkosia it can be sheer hell as flooding always occurs near the industrial estate.

let's hope the forecast is wrong, cos I get quite neurotic. I can't do anything about the flooding of my laundry room, but only in extreme conditions such as two years ago, does it come into the kitchen.

i do hope that parents tutor their kids at home!

Perhaps they know something we don't!

One of my earliest memories is being taken to school (kindergarten, I must have been about four) on a sledge pulled by my mother because I was so small I would have been up to my waist in snow. With hindslight, it probably shows how anxious she was to get rid of me for a couple of hours!

Dear Deniz, Rose and others interested in this,

There may well be only "a couple of showers" tomorrow and maybe on part of the island miles away from you or I, but the reason given by the MoE for tomorrow's closures is indeed the rain.

To be honest it doesn't mention the word "flood" in the report, but that's almost certainly what they're worried about : Last year at Doğa College in Mağusa we had over 30cm in certain parts of the school car park - on wading out to the car it came up to my knees! It was incredibly difficult for the children to be picked up after school. It was interesting though that those living only 20km away in Boğaz saw virtually no rain at all.

In any case, tomorrow's school closures cover the whole of TRNC.

Regards,
Ian

I suppose to avoid any misunderstandings as to which high schools could be open, the MoE have widened the school closures, so that now all state and private schools will be closed tomorrow.

According to Accuweather we can expect more than 29 mm of rain to night. I have just been told by a Cypriot Turkish friends to take a few things from the garden inside as 'hortum' is expected. Meaning tornado. They can, sometimes be rather big in the sea. And I would most certainly not want any of those here, where I live. We will see how what will happen over night. But I am not looking forward to any of it

Or even on cue, Looseboots! I doubt anyone is queuing to enjoy it!

Actually I thought it was early this year. I usually reckon to swim up to the end of October, but I doubt if it will be possible to do so thisyear - certainly not in the sea which will be thoroughly churned up.

I think "showers" have a different definition here - I have noticed before it often means "***** down". But Ian is right , and we have commented on the phenonema on other threads, the weather here can be very localised.
Thanks of the warning Bano - I shall now go out and stuggle with anawkward umbrella in the garden!

Apparently there have been storms in the south. According to the report above, strong winds in Larnaca this evening caused a crane to topple over falling on top of the car (shown below) which in turn caused the elderly couple inside to be trapped. The incident happened at around 8.30 pm, but the fire brigade eventually had them both out of the car by 10pm. Both were taken to hospital.

Yeah, I'm also wondering how a crane could topple over, but there you are, that's what it writes in the report.

In the dim and distant past I ws married to a greek cypriot and he used to bodge everything up so they probably forgot to anchor the crane down.

I just had a look, and Windguru is forecasting 33 mm of rain for today.

The Accuweather forecast does seem more likely, looking outside at the moment, but 'weather' sometimes arrives really fast...

Lovely and sunny in Lapta too at the moment, but the wind's getting up.
After the rain I love how everything smells so fresh too.

According to http://www.haberkktc.com/haber/guneyde- ... 49239.html it was a British couple trapped in the car ... and the woman died as a result of her injuries

The report also tells of floods in Limassol ...

Been over to the South today, and lovely weather, and the roads nearly empty. Would have been a good day for anyone that needed to renew residency, as everyone seemed to be staying at home. My Cypriot friend begged me not to go out this morning because of the rain, I said where, the sun was just coming out, but life here goes into panic mode when it rains. Her kids had a great day off school today in the sunshine!!.

I have aso been warned we may get heavy rain today (tonight?) so dont relax too soon. It looks fine at mo. but clouds are coming over and they can build up v. fast here!

The cooler weather tempted me into the garden- despite the rain this week (a couple of hours fairly steady last night) the ground is still rock hard.

Well Mamachina, according to http://www.haberkktc.com/haber/ktos-yar ... 49302.html, a number of schools, including Alsancak Primary School, will be closed tomorrow morning because of a teachers' strike ...
