Taking pets from TRNC into RoC - official statement.

KAR Pet Travel have recently had several enquiries about the possibility of taking pets from TRNC into RoC, either to live or to transit for flights out of Larnaca or Paphos, and some owners are being advised (not by us) that it is possible . It is not legal nor has it ever been. Ever since we started KAR Pet Travel we have always made it clear that pet movement from TRNC to RoC is prohibited. We recently asked the Government Vet Dept in RoC if the situation had changed without us being aware - it has not and they have made the following statement.

" The whole part of the island of Cyprus is part of the European Union (EU) and is being recognized as a single state (not as “south” and “north”) the legitimate government of which is the Government of the Republic of Cyprus. None borders exist in the Cyprus.

However, in the areas in which the Government of the Republic of Cyprus does not exercise effective control, EU legislation is suspended as per Protocol 10 of the Accession Treaty of 2003.

According to Article 4(9), of Council Regulation (EC) No 866/2004, , “The movement across the line (between the areas in which the Government of the Republic of Cyprus does not exercise effective control and those areas in which the Government of the Republic of Cyprus exercises effective control) of live animals and animal products which are subject to Community veterinary requirements shall be prohibited.”

Therefore, the movement of any species of animal arriving from the occupied by the Turkish military forces areas of the Republic of Cyprus is strictly prohibited."

Please do not be duped into believing that it is ok to take your pets into RoC - anyone who takes animals from here into RoC, for whatever reason, is putting that pet at risk of euthanasia if caught - it is ILLEGAL.

The same prohibition does not apply for pets travelling into the TRNC via RoC - however they MUST still comply with the entry rules.

Kind regards

Thanks so much for that. Only a couple of days ago I was talking to someone and they honestly thought that as my dog has a pet passport, I could take it shopping with me over the border. I told them firmly that was not the case and they found it absolutely incredible. I said that we did too, so thanks so much for putting the whole story on here.

One just has to accept that this is the status quo, even if one could also say 'the law is a ass!'.

Thanks again.

Marions, one wonders if the feral animals, wild birds, butterflies, moths and other insects pay much heed to the RoC law on animal passage as they move across the 'Green Line'? Rhetorical, but it does demonstrate the stupidity some politicians will go to.

could not agree more Tom. The most laughable was the performance when Bird Flu was in the offing. We had to ruin shoes walking through disinfectants on the ground while the birds overhead went wherever they wanted.

It is, to me, all playground stuff at junior school level. If a pet passport is valid in Outer Mongolia, the Great Wall of China, and all places around the world , why the heck can't it be recognized in south Cyprus. Same animal, same safety, same virus free, but................grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Going off the subject a little bit but their is a lady who has posted on Dog Owners of North Cyprus site that she is part of a crew that is making a film with a dog as the star , both on the south and north of the island in September and October.
She is saying because they cannot bring the dog over the border they are looking for a look a like proving what KAR is saying is correct and is the law.
Maybe KAR may have amongst its 400 plus dogs a STAR in the making.
Just a thought! The lady's name is Janine Teerling.

BBB's other half. - Perhaps someone can post a picture on here of the Doggie Star .

It isn't anything to do with safety of animals, it is just the backwards thought process of Greek Cypriots at work again. Any way they can make life difficult for TC's they will do, they are still upset they couldn't murder them all. Turkey should have taken the whole island and expelled them, like the Greeks did to the Turks in all the other "Greek" Islands that are next to Turkey.
