Buying a car in North Cyprus
If an ex pat who holidays say 4 months a year in NC buys a car in NC is there car tax, MOT and insurance like in the UK? Can you tax the car on a 6 monthly basis ? Can the car be taken over to the south and if so is the insurance similar i.e 1 month tax or 3 months/12 months. Thanking you.

No, it must be taxed on a continuous basis (there is no equivalent to the UK's SORN declaration). Can you tax the car on a 6 monthly basis ?
Yes, although you need to obtain a 'Substitute Road Tax Certificate' (or some such document )from the Greek Cypriot Police office at Metehan - opening hours are on the forum, if you do a search... The vehicle owner needs to do this in person, and present himself, the vehicle, and ALL documents to complete this procedure. Can the car be taken over to the south
I'm not sure what you mean by '1 month tax', but you can buy 3rd party insurance for the South at any crossing point for 25 Euros per month, 12 months would cost you 12 x 25 Euros.and if so is the insurance similar i.e 1 month tax or 3 months/12 months. Thanking you.
'Comprehensive Cover' TRNC insurance would not cover you in the South, nor would it entitle you to 'Recovery' - i.e. bringing a damaged vehicle back to TRNC, although such cover can be arranged as an 'extra'.

oh yes you can BUT it has to be the six months of the existing tax year for the car.Keithcaley wrote:Murphy wrote:NOCan you tax the car on a 6 monthly basis ?
.
Example My tax is due 1st August so I can go and unregister it for tax purposes but can not use it until after January when I can pay six months tax to use the vehicle from February 1st to July 31st
Customers who have done this after the first time have found the paper work and office visits very time consuming and generally decide tax it for the year
I should of added everything revolves around the car's birthday therefore changes can only be made then, ie tax for six months, un tax for six months, tax for whole year or as below states tax 6 months then do another 6 months

Sorry Keith but it doesn't have to be the registered owner of the car to get the "road tax form " or whatever it is , at the border , just need all docs & uk driving license & they will issue the said form .
And you can also tax a car for 6 months but when that runs off if it's the first time you have put six months on it you have to tax it for another 6 months , they won't let you tax it for a year , when it's had 2 lots of 6 months tax you can then tax it for 12 if you wish , it's also more expensive to do it for 6 months . That's how I understand it & have done both of the above numerios times .

Then ruggy, the RoC Min of Tpt has changed the rules. When we did our car last Jan, the guy insisted I prove who I was and checked on the Kocan that my name was the registered owner. He then politely explained he did this to ensure I had not stolen the vehicle, which made sense.

Yes it does make sense I agree but I've done it several times & leant my car to friends & they got it done no problem.
As Keith is saying , I think it's on the day & who you get serve you I guess .
