We were told that there was a problem with the chlorination and would get it in Catalkoy in about 3 months.

Rumours abound. Latest in Esentepe is. Expats will be charged 2000 Tl for meter and then 1200 TL for infrastructure costs. Locals and mainland Turks - 650 TL. Cost rumoured to be 5.5 TL per tonne, not sure if there is a minimum of x tonne per month @ Y cost (ie - you get charged for 10 tonne whether you are here/use it or not, then additional cost for anything over the minimum). Will be interested to know what my next-door-neighbour (TC) is charged as we live on the same estate.

Rumours do indeed abound TS, my other half has been told by others that the water meter will cost 300TL and that 300TL must be added to the card as credit for our water. As for infrastructure cost not sure yet.

Lapta changed all our meters to the new smart meters last year at no cost.
With the old meter we had to pay for a minimum of 10 tonnes each month whether we used it or not.

With the new meters we only pay for what we use.
We have a smart card and put water credit onto it when we wish ( the max you can add is 30 tonnes) by going to their local office.
We then put the card into the meter (just for about 10 seconds) to receive the said volume of water.
The credit on the card or that transferred to the meter does not expire.
We currently pay 3TL per tonne which will increase to 5TL shortly.

I have been to see them in the council offices at Esentepe and was also told that the cost per meter was 2000tl and was not negotiable. We live on a complex with no mains supply so was expecting to pay for the infrastructure but it seems the Brits are being targeted again if the cost to locals and mainland Turkish people is so much different to what I was told. I intend to see if there is anyone ( government official ) that can sort this out. It is using water to rob people which is immoral.

Geoff, my TC neighbour advised an approach to the Interior Minister in Lefkosa. He is incensed with rage at this blatant discrimination. He also advised we tell the Mayor there will be no more expat support of local schools, health care clinics etc and we spend no money in the businesses, restaurants and shops within the Esentepe area (easily done too). I hope the mayor is reading these posts or being advised of this disquiet felt.

2000TL for the meter! We already got new card meters on pay as you go last year!! Are you saying we are going to have to have ANOTHER new meter when the Turkish water arrives?

And make sure the BRS know, so that they can add this to their survey on why the Brits are de-camping and no new ones moving here.

We live in Esentepe and have had a smart meter for over a year for which we paid 360TL, we had already paid for the original meter. Are you suggesting that we have to pay for a new meter or is the cost quoted for people who are not already on mains? BTW a group of us had to pay for the tarmac road to connect our homes to the village road and the cost of laying the mains pipes was included. So you can imagine that we are not happy to pay any more.

My understanding is:

360 YTL for 1st tranche meters (done).
650 YTL for 2nd tranche TC and mainlanders. For expats is is 2000 YTL for expats plus an additional infrascructure cost of 1200 YTL.
Ergo, if you have the new meter you (SHOULD) be spared of any more cost.

The reason I started this thread is,
while driving into Girne today, there was a burst water pipe,
next one of the new pump stations.
The gushing leak must have been 25-30 feet in height.
Assumed it could've been the Güzelyurt Dam/Turkish water
being switched on for testing.

As for the prices of meters etc, unbelievable.
Why the variation in prices from one Belediyesi to another?
All the water's from the same place.
All the meters should be the same.

Have had almost constant water for the past 2 weeks here in Karsiyaka.
Never had that before at this time of the year.

Also read that in Lefkosa they will be paying up to 7.9TL per ton. How can that be justified when the water from Turkey is only 2.3 per ton.

Navek, is that 20 days from today or 20 days beyond the original planned supply date?..... whenever that originally was!

Wish we were getting it every 5 days, we live just beyond Sea Terra and it's only been coming on every 7 to 10 days for the past 3 months. I think it's the same for Sea Terra and for a lot of the residents there it's not on long enough to get any so they are paying 20 TL a tonne to get water tankered in. We've had to pump pool water into our water tank on occasion but at least we have that option.

We are in Esentepe and haven't had any mains water for about 10 weeks. Its been the same every summer for the past five years. They don't supply enough water or leave it on long enough to supply the top of our site.

MrsD, what has the Belediye done about it over the past 5 years? How do you get water, is it via tanker? If so, he has vowed to prosecute anybody getting water from any other source than his - it's on video!

aylin, we are on SeaTerra, recently there for just over 2 weeks and didn't get a drop! As you say, they just don't leave it on for long enough. The site only ever has on average around 25% occupancy (out of 88 properties) so god knows what the water situation would be like if the site was fully occupied!!!!

I think we are on the same supply as sea terra. In The summer when we mention to the Bele we just get the shoulder shrug. In the winter it is left on longer and we get water no problem. My concern is if the water is left on in the summer but everyone is filling their pools will our supply pipe be adequate to still give us water. If there are no tankers we will have no backup to mains water.

Me thinks the Mayor knows it may be a while before the Turkish water reaches Esentepe- hence the 5 day restriction.

As for his exclusivity threat - does he really believe he can shut down the private wells or prevent them for being used by the locals who own them. And if they do use their own wells they will be fined.

Interesting days ahead.

I don't think that he's making these 'threats' off his own back - I think that he's quoting the terms of the new Water Protocol that was agreed, where, as part of the deal, the control of ALL water resources in TRNC was to pass to the private company who were to distribute the water. I seem to remember seeing that (after a lot of protests) it had been agreed that the Belediyes would handle the water distribution, rather than a private company, so possibly the other powers were bestowed on the Belediyes as part of the deal.

I can't find anything 'solid' on what was actually agreed, just articles saying 'The new Water Protocol has been agreed, and will be signed...' etc.

If someone can come up with the wording, then we might have a better idea of what is going on! - I will keep looking though.

You are probably right but I just don't believe that part of the protocol includes the closure of privately owned wells.

I can see the financial logic behind closing the commercial wells and banning water tankers but I really don't think he will be empowered to close private wells and how would he police this act?

Noticed yesterday, Sunday 28th, workmen at the Esentepe pump station, on the main road,
have boxed the electric mains cables, left of door.
I don't know if they fitted a switch or not,
as they had closed the box and left the scene when I returned.
Info only, but looks promising.

As reported in last weeks CT a government official maintains the water will be flowing within the next month.

Others are saying December/ January and noticeably our mayor is saying nothing -he still hasn't started to repair the roads as promised 4 weeks ago.

Friend of mine in an area of Alsancak has had mains water 24/7 for weeks and weeks. The pressure is so high they have had to switch it off at the tap outside their gate as some of the pipe joints on their property couldn't cope. No rhyme nor reason to who gets what.

Friends of mine in separate locations up in Alsancak Village also have water 24/7.

North of the Coast Road, we have been told that our water will be on once every seven or eight days - and that's normally for around 4 or six hours only - until such time as the Turkish water is supplied to us.

Asked when that would be, they gave the usual Cyprus shrug

We are quite high up in Alsancak on mountain side obviously but on the Karaoglanoglu side of Alsancak and get water every 4 or 5 days, so believe me its only "hot spots" in Alsancak that are getting water 24/7.
