Help needed with PC problem - resolved
I have windows 10 on my laptop and yesterday found that icons on the task bar are not working. When clicking on them they do not respond.
I cannot open the shut down process icon, the internet, volume control or notifications. Any advice, help would really be appreciated.
Please bear in mind that my PC technical skills are basic.

Re: Help needed with PC problem
If your laptop is not responding and you can't shut it down, remove the power cable ( if attached) and then the battery from it and reinsert, that should allow you to restart it. If you still have a problem report back and no doubt someone else can talk you through the next steps.

I have removed the battery and replaced it but unfortunately the problem still remains. Strangely enough I can open google and task view from the task bar but nothing else.

Re: Help needed with PC problem
If you can get to your browser then try a Google search on "windows10 task bar icons frozen".
Seems to be a common problem.

Might it be a problem of overheating? I get similar problems with my HP which doesn't like 30+ degrees.

Re: Help needed with PC problem
I don't think that it has anything to do with heating as it is the same wen just switched on. I ran a programme ( as suggested by BT on the website) through the task manager to check for corruption but none found. So it's back to the drawing board. Quite surprised that no suggestions from the usual computer boffins that regularly post on here.

Re: Help needed with PC problem
Since installing Window 10 we have the same issue every so often, we do a re start the using ctrl, alt, & Del buttons and when it starts up again we have control.

Sorry but this doesn't work for me. Thanks Gary & Shirley post 12. Tried Google and youtube. One suggestion didn't work the other one I fell asleep listening to it.If you suffer from insomnia listen to it.

Re: Help needed with PC problem
Try the following since it has helped others last year:
1. Right-click at Start and click RUN
2. type SERVICES.MSC and press the enter key
3. right click on APPLICATION IDENTITY and select START
4. Reboot after a few minutes.
If this does not help then you might want to run Windows Update - and then reboot.

Keith, Thanks for the info, I got so far but couldn't locate the data layer to delete. It's a bit too technical for me. also couldn't find the set as administrator by clicking windows button on key pad and R. Managed to do same by control alt delete.

Re: Help needed with PC problem
Update, Followed googles direction on youtube as posted by Keith. Did stages 1-4, couldn't complete stage 5 so closed down and went to bed. This morning all is fine again. I have to put it down to my good luck more than good judgement. Thanks to all that posted!!
