It brought it home to me the other day when giving directions to a newcomer (well - 2 years here) and I said 'turn right at the Golden Lady'. 'The what' was the reply - and justifiably so I realised when I drove past this morning.
10 years ago she was golden although looking perhaps a bit shabby - now she is a dirty muddy brown colour. Come on Alsancak, how much can it cost for a man and a couple of tins of decent gold paint and restore her to her true glory. She is far more an icon for Alsancak than your strange (and now messageless) gantry over the road.

Gantry now half hanging down, what a mess. It was never a nice structure but should now be taken down altogether.

Does anyone know what she is supposed to represent anyway, I've not really thought about it although I bet the answers obvious and I'm going to be embarassed when I find out.

We've always referred to her The Dame with the Flame. A local once explained to me who the "lady" was modelled on. It was bit naughty and I've never been able to ascertain whether he was "having me on" or not!
