Proposed Custodial Sentences for buying/selling GC property

In the above Kıbrıs report, the GC political party, DISI, is to bring a motion to the GC parliament proposing the introduction of custodial sentences for anyone involved in the sale or rental of northside GC property or land.

The proposal states that anyone who, after knowingly receiving GC land or property, is found to sell it on, or anyone who knowingly tries to buy GC land, should be liable for up to seven years’ imprisonment.

Furthermore the proposal states that anyone who tries to rent out GC property or agents involved with the sale or rental of GC property should be liable for up to five years’ imprisonment.

In the report there is no distinction between nationalities. Thus, if passed, it could mean that the GC courts could seek the imprisonment of, say, a British expat for buying and/or selling GC land/property

It is not clear if this proposal could be become law southside, but the DISI party does have the support of about 30% of the electorate there. And in theory any law accepted by one EU member country has to be respected by other EU countries

However, I don’t think it will be passed, because the more rational-thinking GC MPs will realise that it will lead to zero cooperation from TCs from now on with regard to any possible settlement. There is also likely to be pressure from the EU for the proposal not to be passed.

One would also hope, that in the event of this proposal becoming law, similar laws would be brought in to support TCs owning land and property in the south. That said, the matter of southside TC land being sold on is not the issue that it is here in the north.

For the record, one of the DISI MPs active in supporting this proposal is Sotiris Sampson, son of Nikos Sampson.

Funny, found that very amusing. Makes me wonder what planet some people are on. Thanks Iancrumpy for posting an amusing article.
I am beginning to think that working towards a solution has dragged on for far too long. If there had been compromise on both sides many years ago it may have been possible. The longer it is left the more difficult it becomes, and statements like that do not help matters one bit.

I agree Soner. It would seem to me that many GCs have now accepted there won't be a solution, and so such a law wouldn't harm any negotiations.

However, these days I feel it is TCs who are more reluctant to proceed with negotiations, as they now realise that any settlement would fully expose the quagmire regarding GC property/land in the north ... and so they are happy for it to stay as it is.

Indeed, Sampson, wasn't a nice piece of work, but getting back to the subject of the thread, and in regards to comments such as "amusing article" and "pinch of salt", I should make it clear that at least the Kıbrıs newspaper is taking the proposed law quite seriously.

OK accepted, the newspaper is clearly pandering to the anti-GC feelings of its readership. Indeed the Kıbrıs report starts by saying "The son of Nikos Sampson ...". However, it would seem that KKTC politicians are also concerned about the possibility of this proposal being passed ... they are certainly not amused by the prospect.

been there before...

times were that the european arrest warrant and the ICHR
would deliver back all that the gc side claimed ...or so it was thought
by the more impressionable

but the court of human rights eventually plumped for the immmoveable
properties commission in the north while latest news on arrest warrants
is that the british home secretary has announced plans to render them
invalid in the uk

also remember that anyone serving foreign court papers in north cyrus
is now in line for seven years in jail

as a non-cypriot I can see that greek cypriot claimants have a case
but their situation seems to be more or less hopeless without any
overall settlement on the horizon and with many falling over themselves
to register with the properties commission

finally the collapse of property prices is opening up a rich seam for
bargain hunters
