Jointing compound
I've tried a few DIY stores (all with a wide range of items) (west of Girne) for Boss White/Hawk White; one or two know of them but do not stock them, while others don't seem to be aware of these or what they do - does anyone know where I might get one or the other? I've tried PTFE tape by itself, but as usual, it's not up to the job where pressure is involved....

Re: Jointing compound
I have not seen it here, I brought some from the UK used it once, by the time I needed it again it had dried up to crust, maybe that's why they don't have it here. Some of the Yapi's sell hemp ask what the locals use with it, they may have an alternative like red lead. I used hemp on the threads then PTFE tape over that, worked well.

Thanks for that; I now remember that as one of the old traditional methods (like horsehair in lath and plaster) - one DIY place did suggest "rope", which I now suspect would have included some other substance - perhaps I should have tried that!

PTFE tape should be more than adequate for water pressures out here.
I assume it's for a water pipe?

There are different grades/quality of PTFE tape. Ask for a "gas" grade as it's a bit thicker
Cheers

ptfe tape with a bit of clear silicone mastic, works evertime.
