"Advanced password manager" - is it a scam?

This morning , I've started to see a 'popup' (screenshot below) which reads:

"Your identity is at risk. Download advanced password manager to start safeguarding your identity"

I use Avast free antivirus software, and it doesn't appear to be related to that, or to have triggered Avast into any sort of action...

I did a search on Google, but couldn't determine whether it really is what it says it is. There is a homepage which looks genuine enough, but then these things often do!

I also found a cfew websites that recommended it, and one that tells you how to remove it - all of which proves nothing...

Does anyone actually know anything about it?

Hi, thanks for that - I had seen a few other reviews, and although they are generally 'mildly in favour' they are also quite old, and it appears that the product has not been updated in the last 10 years!

It just made me wonder whether the product had been hijacked, and was being used for some more nefarious purpose...

After reading that last review, I've decided that the 'Do not bother me anymore with this' option is the one to go for

Download advanced password manager to start safeguarding your identity" - in all fairness it matters not what you use and what you (as a member of the general public) can buy - "Your identity is at risk always" it depends on how badly somebody wants it!!! I have always had grave doubts about any company that sends you emails advertising their "Security" products - why do they do it and where did they get your email address from are the first two questions! The third and to my mind the most important question is even darker - if you are a software writer/designer then would you design, write and then sell a package that you could not get back into "easily" should your customers have problems with it? If the answer is yes then I am sorry to have to say this but - "Your identity is at risk" unless of course you can trust this company implicitly!

Operate in the knowledge that whatever "package" you install on your equipment, someone, somewhere may just want to break it for fun or for gain, I have no doubt that you, shall we say "Bet Responsibly", so just apply that to all things Internet and you should be ok.

Hi waddo, I didn't have any intention of installing the thing, but I was interested to know if anyone else was getting the same pop up - and also in where the hell it came from!

Keith, I would regard anything that appears to have "snook" onto your machine with concern.

If you need to download a tool to get rid of it, I would be even more suspicious.

I would pass it up.

Keith, understand. I get so many "Pop Ups" these days and have so many different types of "SPAM" stoppers that my old PC is running slower and slower - I say my old PC because that is just a gash one I keep for testing things like "Pop Up" blockers (most don't work anyway) and SPAM stoppers.

I know you are super cautious with your kit but thought a general warning may help others.

Both him indoors and I have had 3 or 4 over the last couples of weeks. I have worked on the theory and hope that the protection is as good as I can get it and what Keith has copied is a scam.
