Denktaş will vote ‘No’ in referendum
“In the end it looks like we will be called to take part in a referendum in March or April,” said Denktaş and added that he would be voting ‘no’ at the referendum as the developments in the country do not benefit the Turkish Cypriot people.
I WILL BE IN TRNC IN APRIL AND I WILL ALSO VOTE NO!

Lets rephrase that. "developments in the country do not benefit Denktaş".

Re: Denktaş will vote ‘No’ in referendum
I came here to livde 12 years ago when there was no realistic expectations of a settlement. I think it is fair to say that if the GC's are happy with the way the talks are going then you can be sure it will not be good for the Turkish Cypriots. As for the troops leaving, they leave, I definitely leave.
Does anyone really believe that the EU (if there is one by then) or the UN will protect the Turkish Cypriot people when the GC's revert to type and try to finish off what they started in 1963/4.
The only security for the north is the Turkish armed forces. No-one else cares. No-one else cared before and nothing has changed.

Trooper, you should add expats to the protection list as we all regarded " carpet baggers " or worse by many if not most of the GC's

Cambridge; you are quite right, I suspect we would be one of the first targets of the GC's if they were to suddenly appear over the mountains armed to the teeth. Then it would be time for some serious swimming north for both the TC's and the ex pats. That's if we were lucky.......

There's many a slip twixt cup and lip!
I'll be very surprised if this get's to a referendum. It's the GCs who will have to bend more, I've no doubt about that.

Sorry about that, I can only put it down to tiredness and creeping old age!

Sorry to say I, like an awful lot of people our age, will be sitting here with our heads in the sand. We cannot vote one way or another, we have nowhere to move to even if the GC's were to come over the mountains to the rear of our house. We don't have the money to bribe anyone, be it TC or GC. We would just have to fall on our swords, and I don't fancy that!!

I wouldn't lose any sleep over something that is highly unlikely to happen, Sophie. There must be something better than that for you to get depressed about. Life's too short.

Sophie, it was just the same situation when we came in 2002 and moved here forever in 2007, we knew then that we could not vote, we knew we would have nowhere to move to and we certainly did not then (or now) have any money for bribes BUT we have enjoyed the last 9.5 years and will continue to do so on a day by day basis. Keep your chin up, tomorrow is another day and it can all change again by then - who knows what the future can bring?
Never forget that the peace talks are going to be successful and everyone will be friends again in 2004, the Turkish water will be here in 2011, the filters on the power station will be in place 3 months after they arrive in 2012 and the winning numbers for next weeks lottery are 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (the same as the password for your WiFi router - lol. Come on and smile - the sun is out and the Greeks have not made it over the mountain yet!!!

No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

Re: Denktaş will vote ‘No’ in referendum
My last post was "tongue in cheek". Sorry if anyone took it seriously. I can't be bothered to worry myself over something over which I have absolutely no control. Certainly not losing any sleep. Have just come back from a lovely walk with the 4 dogs, having a nice cup of tea and munching on a chocolate biscuit, prioring to making a batch of mince pies.
If the Prime Minister of Japan can visit Pearl Harbour with President Obama, surely to god this lot can start to learn to bury the hatchet???
