Recycling

We have always been very keen on recycling plastic, cans etc. and were delighted when the Sah supermarket placed the bins outside to enable us to do this. I have been told today that all this just goes into a landfill site and doesn't actually get recycled. Does anybody know if this is true and therefore we are wasting our time doing our little bit to help save the planet.
