Panchocat, Exactly right on "Newbie", to Sewage - but if you have not seen any improvements in the past 20 years and only now are starting to complain about the roads then I think you must be getting old and grouchy - lol. 20 years ago the roads were errr, tracks, then came gravel and after that came that strange black stuff that melts and runs down the mountains in the summer - remember how much fun it was going over the mountain road and swapping across both sides of the road till you found a bit of tarmac - with taxi's coming back up the mountain and using the other side of the road because you were going down on the wrong side??? Remember how long it used to take to get to Esentepe? Remember when they first put tarmac on the coast road [past Tatlisu? Don't let it get to you, life's too short, just enjoy what we have left please. Before you ask, yes I do remember these things, I also remember riding my 250cc Yamaha right around the Island in 1970 on a snorkeling trip with my buddy on the back and having to run the damn thing on paraffin for 35 miles because we could not find any petrol!! Probably why I came back here to live and enjoy the lack of PC and amenities. Progress will grind on with or without us, you just have to wait. Take care on the roads and live long.
No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

Excuse me Sewage but I have lived here for twenty years , and for the first ten or so in peace and quiet with comparatively little danger on the roads , despite their admittedly poor surface condition.

Why exactly do you think you have the right to damage my health and my property to the extent I cant even exit my front door, because you choose to drive an unsuitable vehicle , and to say I should move for your convenience Why exactly do I have to continue to breathe your exhaust fumes? Did you actually read my post? Yes, I do have"issues" with people who drive 4 x 4s , mainly because I would like to be able to get out of my front door safely and not to spent so much time cleaning up other people's muck

But also because of the unnecessary size of most of them and the fact that in most cases their drivers seem to think they have priority over every other road user and to take up three normal parking spaces, and to blind other road users with their headlights. My views , incidentally , are shared by a lot of other people, including in the UK and the USA where the roads are normally wider and better maintained than here and who share my view that (except in a few special circumstances) the need to drive an unnecessarily large and powerful vehicle suggests greed and selfishness and a complete disregard of the lives of others. As for the argument that it is "a lot safer" it may give a driver with an enlarged ego a false sense of security not to mention superiority ,, but both are totally false and the proliferation of these vehicles only increases the danger to normal road users who are content with an ordinary saloon car

As for "live and let live" that is precisely what I am asking people to let ME do!

Hi RR,

I found the 'photo here on this very forum.

I remembered having seen it last year on a thread to which you had contributed, and at the time I had downloaded the picture and applied a little 'colour correction', as it was showing signs of age.

According to the OP - munchy - it was taken in 1983.

Keith: Thank you so very much for resurrecting that wonderful thread. A pity we don't get more like that on Kibcom these days. I just knew that picture could not have been taken recently! I can only hope that people on this thread will read it and try to understand something of a wonderful lifestyle that they are contributing to destroying.

Now you have jogged my memory I think there was a further thread on which people gave their memories of the fifties onward with the intention of contributing to a book on the TRNC. I think I still have my contribution somewhere in my files, but unfortunately the thread turned into a lengthy description of someone's schooldays and faded out.

RR

I started the thread you mention. It was called Cyprus Remembered. The reason I started it was because I had indeed spent 3 fabulous years at a Forces school back in the early 70s whilst my father was stationed at RAF Akrotiri. I also was fortunate to serve out here in the 80s and 90s when in the Forces. In addition we have holidayed out here many times over the last 40 years.

As a result of those memories of special times we eventually decided to buy a small place in the TRNC.

The thread had many contributions from people of all ages, including yourself. We shared our memories of Cyprus and especially those times which were special to all of us. It was a great thread, with many different experiences being shared plus positive comments from both those who contributed or read it.

Your comment that the thread faded out due to "someone's" lengthy description of schooldays is in my opinion incorrect and somewhat barbed and I am at a loss as to why you think this. There were many different contributions from members ranging across a huge number of experiences and memories. I would suggest you re read the thread.

Whilst you will disagree, in my opinion the thread was very positive throughout and ended naturally after the contributions ended.

Posh: In my recollection the thread certainly was not completed . I had loads of material , but was putting it together and editing as I went on on Word rather than waffle on board with experiences which, on rereading , it was so easy to make personal and uninteresting to others. When I came back to the thread I found it overtaken by reminiscences of schooldays which seemed to be never ending : someone must have had far more time on their hands than I had?!!!

However I would be quite glad to accept your suggestion to re-read the thread and revise my opinions, but on trying to "Search" "Cyprus Remembered" I got so many I was overwhelmed! I am not very good on computers generally and find this site in particularly confusing. Could someone give me a clue how to find it!

I still think with many people still around with memories (and some with photos) there is a good book in there = but it does need someone capable of being impartial and with loads of spare time to collate it and be firm about what is and isn't included.

From the very beginning, including the early misgivings....
I enjoyed the whole thread so much that I copied, pasted and saved practically all of it, so that I could read again whenever I wanted (as I have!).
All my life, I have always enjoyed (and often encouraged) other folk's reminiscences "off the cuff" - you get the "feel" of places and times that you might not always get if/when the person has set out specifically to write a book of their experiences.
In either instance there may be sections/subject less interesting than others, but if so - just skip through....
I do hope more memories are revived and posted.....
(I notice I've been beaten with a link!)

The thread faded away due to lack of contributions and we cannot force people to continue to write something. I did not think of the contributions as waffle and in fact many of the comments on the board were very positive and so what was written must have struck a chord with many. Of course not every memory will be of interest to everyone, but for the writer it is important enough for them to share and long may it continue. If it doesn't interest we can always skip past it.

Whilst there were thoughts of turning the thread into a book, we never got to that stage. However, all good books rely on material, which is then edited, collated before the final content is pulled together. With insufficient material a book is never going to happen so I don't agree that there should be any constraints on what people wish to write and what is/is not included. It certainly was not waffle.

I am no expert nor do I have the time to work on producing a book, but would have been happy to continue to read about people's memories whether that be from schooldays, national service, working or even the foreign or colonial service. Maybe you could resurrect the thread with all of your material you wrote?

Cyprus Remembered
Postby PoshinDevon » Wed Apr 29, 2015 12:00 pm

Amongst the thread of chidhood memories a number of people have been posting about their childhood memories of Cyprus from years gone by.

There has been a suggestion that perphaps a separate thread be started purely for those who have memories of Cyprus from childhood, teenage or earlier years. It does appear that there are a few of us! It appears that memories go back to the 1950s or possibly earlier. My memories started in 1970.

Another suggestion was to get these memories compiled and maybe even pull them all together to form a book..... a big task but it could happen. We would of course need to organjse ourselves if this were ever to come to fruition.

In the meantime even if the book does not happen please use this thread if you have memories of Cyprus as a child, it will be an interesting thread whatever happens.

Unless anyone objects, those that have already posted childhood memories of Cyprus on the Childhood Memoris thread I will move them to this thread.....let me know if you would prefer this not to happen
."

My underlining.please see next post.

Hi Posh

btw I was looking for my earlier post on the Childhood memories about Evdhimou Jetty, to save repeating myself and to follow it up but it seems to have disappeared ! I though the relevant posts were going to be transferred here?

Perhaps you could find my posts on Evdhimou Jetty. I spent time and trouble on writing them and though you dont seem to appreciate others time constraints really dont have time to do them again, and unfortunately it was before I realised the need to back up everything on this forum in case it mysteriously disappeared!

Sorry for the three posts - I dont know how to copy and paste more than one at a time! More later, I have other urgencies tonight.

Could be Silver Fox, but it seems a shame that the time and trouble taken by those who to contributed to what we hoped might be an interesting and informative book should be wasted. I certainly dont intend to waste more time on it if incidents like my lost contribution are likely to occur. It does not exactly encourage posters to support Kibcom when their efforts and time and so uncaringly treated as worthless and tossed away. I prefer to wait in the hope that some time before I go I will find time and peace to write my own book!

Posh: I hope the foregoing answers your points and that the unexplained loss of my Evdhimou post speaks for itself. Regardless of that I don't feel I can waste more time on the subject. A pity because it would have been so valuable to explain to newcomers what life could be really like and perhaps encourage a greater interest in the country and discourage the "British Raj" attitude to our hosts.

As for the book, while I would have seriously considered a little gentle subediting but, to collate , produce, publish and, particularly, sell a book of this nature takes expertise which I for one lack, and all indications are that so do you! Nor would either of us be suitable for choosing and cutting the contributions impartially and fairly. I had hoped that someone with more relevant experience of publishing might come forward

As far as your own contributions were concerned frankly I am sorry to say I don't like your style. However that is a matter of individual taste, what particularly concerned me what that you appeared to be writing an autobiography of you schooldays, nothing wrong with that of course, but I did think that the purpose of the thread and the potential book was to highlight a period in the history of Cyprus and the Cypriots rather than indulge in our own personal memories, difficult though I admit that might be difficult for all of us.

I shall not be adding more to this thread except to say that I do have a lot of unsorted photographs of Cyprus in the early 60s and late 90s. The former were taken by my father and are very good and I suspect some unique, but mostly on slides. The others are my own old fashioned photos and though I say it as shouldn't not bad and taken with with a conventional camera. Again I lack the time and know-how and probably the money and facilities to transfer these to modern media let alone this site, but would be pleased to talk to anyone who is genuinely interested.in the history of Cyprus for its own sake.

RR, I don't know which particular posts of yours you think are 'lost', but on the Cyprus Remembered thread, there were over 90 posts - are you absolutely sure that yours isn't on there? - It does run to more than one page, and there is quite a bit from you...

Bear in mind that 'The Internet' as a whole is inherently ephemeral - websites can crash and disappear, and all of the information on them be lost - not because of malice, or that nobody cares, simply that '"ooops" Happens'

If you place any value at all on your work, it is your own responsibility to secure its safe storage - uploading material to a website is no guarantee of its survival!

If you really can't find it, just enter Evdhimou into the search box at the top of the page...

- and especially this site when trying to post a reply (no offence, Soner & Mods - I know it's a quirk of the forum software or the DDOS protection) - after having typed so many replies that have disappeared when I click 'submit', just because I've taken too long and been disconnected.... I now compose and write all my comments and replies in notepad and then copy and paste into the 'Post reply' section.
I used to frequently hop up and down because my post "had been deleted as soon as I sent it"......
Then I realised - took me a while, because it didn't happen on other forums - until I joined one that used the same forum software.....
A light gently dawns.....

Interesting Joffra and rather confirms what I had begun to suspect, but in this particular case the post DID actually appear, just disappeared at a later stage after a Moderator had said he would transfer it!

KC: Been there done that (twice!) and got the T shirt and wasted a lot of valuable time in the process.Neither Evdhimou (various spellings tried) nor Evdhimou Jetty shows up on seach, except in my posts on this thread!!!! I also keep having problems of duplicate posts which seems to occur when I get the message about a new post, and again never occurs on other forums I use.

This thread has gone way off topic and I am starting a new one after further consideration of Silver Fox's comments on the wisdom of memories..l

RR, I did try it myself before I suggested it - my search for Evdhimou brought up this thread with 100 posts - are you talking about another thread altogether?

Have you tried clicking on 'View your posts'? - this should list every post that you've ever made!

Don't for goodness sake start another thread with the same general theme, or else the posts will get distributed over even more ground! - Best to have 'em all in the same spot if possible, even if people's memories and timescales vary...

This thread is entitled Sadly Neglected and started off as a discussion re the state of some of the villages.

It has drifted off topic, for which we are all guilty and discussion turned to a posting from a few years back entitled Cyprus Remembered.

Going forward please can we ask you return to the original topic and for this thread post thoughts on the Sadly Neglected theme. The opening post should help understand what this topic is about.

Anyone wishing to post on the topic Cyprus Remembered which is about personal memories of times on this island from years gone by please share these on this topic. Again if you read the opening post it gives an idea of the type of contributions that follow. With almost 9,500 hits many have commented on the thread that this topic makes for a very interesting read. It is about peoples experiences and memories of the island from the 50s, 60s and 70s and later. Memories range from schooldays, service life and living and working in Cyprus. The impact that the island had on us during those times was such that many have returned to make it their home.
