Which ever route you decide to take, you will encounter snow, lots and lots of it, so I so recommend you drive very carefully. As important is a regular wary eye on the locals in the rear mirror, as tailgating seems to be their biggest sport! Running into the back of another vehicle collects not 10, not 20, but 30 points!

We did this route in October 2015:
Dover-Dunkirk-Luxembourg-Munich-Ljubljana-Belgrade-Plovdiv-Istanbul-Ankara-Tasucu (overnight ferry)
Plovdiv is worth seeing, and it is European City of Culture next year. Istanbul is crazy to drive in, so stay on the north side and get a tram into the town centre for sightseeing.

Information to help you with road maps and if you click on all links above the page, helpful information also once you enter Turkey and Istanbul.
The Highways Link Map doesn't work for me but just click on the other or the appropriate number to get maps

I've also found the RAC route planner works as far as Tasucu, and usually gives you 2 or 3 options.

BTW you can book the ferry from Tasucu to Kyrenia online, but to book a cabin you have to go to the ferry office in Tatlisu town. It was 80 TL extra when we booked on, but is well worth doing. They use an old Baltic freight ferry on this route, so the passenger area is small and gets really crowded, remember its a long crossing. With a cabin we did at least get a few hours sleep.
